Side loaders
While working at a shipping company I remember most ships had laundry rooms with horizontal tub "side loading" washers. Just imagine a washer with a 4 to 6 foot long tub, which was laid with the axis paralell to the front of the unit (as reference, FL's have their axis perpendicular to the front of the unit). There was an opening door like those old ovens which tilted back exposing the tub. The tub had a large opening door which tilted upwards. These units never spun clothes, just washed and rinsed at tumbling speeds.
