Older dryer recomendation

So I've finally got a vintage washer that cleans better than our front loader, now I'm in search of a quick and dependable older dryer to go along with the wringer and a spin dryer. I've seen alot of good things about the whirlpool dryers with the lint trap at the top,I believe they are known as the equiflow dryers. I've seen quite a few near me for 100 bucks or less but are there any machines that are considered better than the whirlpool? Or would you say that they are pretty much one of the best performance wise? Thanks all!

Whirlpool and Kenmore

They are one and the same, and since 1966, with that real long filter in the top and the stationary rear bulkhead, make the longest lasting, most easily repaired, fine driers. Also, since millions were sold each year, they are easy to find from the bottom of the line to the top models with all the bells and whistles. Check your local Craigslist, over a month or so you'll have plenty to choose from.

Yes, Whirlpool or Kenmore driers, hands down the best.

I bought my Maytags new in 1984 and it still drys just fine with zero spent in repairs. But get a real Maytag, not the new imposters.

My washer is a 1965..

Lady Kenmore wringer washer with the visimatic wringer and built in filter. We're probably going to get rid of our front loader set at somepoint in the not so far off future because a lot of the detergents where causing my dad skin issues and the free and clear variety didn't help solve the issue very well so I've formulated a soap based cleaner for the wringer and we plan on getting a spin x extractor but for now the spin cycle on the front loader gets that job. Did all of the whirlpool/Kenmore dryers like we're talking about all have the same size drum? And are the drop down doors any easier to load than the side open style or is it all personal preference.

You can't go wrong with an older Whirlpool/Kenmore dryer and they do surface fairly often.  Not sure about the capacity... The '56 Whirlpool dryer drum looks about the same size as the '65 Lady K and the '66 Inglis, but my eyes are not to be trusted! 

 

As to a drop-down door VS side-swing,  where the dryer will be installed may have an impact.  The Lady K with a drop-down door in St-Lib is installed in our bathroom - I find it a minor pain as I have to close the bathroom door to load or unload the dryer.  However, because I have shakes and shudders, the drop-door drum means a lot less clothes wind up on the floor as I load or unload the dryer. 

 

Final consideration - parts for Whirlpool/Kenmore dryers are still relatively easy to find.  I've had "fun" trying to find drum rollers for older GE dryers!

not all dryers are created equal.....

for best drying results, especially with minimal to no wrinkling, stick with a Whirlpool/Kenmore.....no other machine compares to the results of these machines...

that 'soft heat' feature makes all the difference in the world....

the drop down door really helps with loading/unloading...prefer the full width, which only comes with the largest capacity...

Agree with all the others, the top filter Whirlpool/Kenmore models are the one by which all others compare (and most other come up short). They are dead simple to keep running and parts will be available for decades to come.

I had a early 70's Kenmore up to just a few years ago when I replaced it with a modern Cabrio dryer. You just can't kill those things, it is still running in a friends home now. Personally I like the side swinging door on the Cabrio better then the old hamper door. I think they call it that because it "hampers" easy access to the back of the drum lol The work surface is nice for sorting etc though.

Hopefully you have gas so you don't have to deal with a slow and expensive electric dryer.

That Whirlpool design is still being used, at least by looking at the outside. Still has the top mount filter.

IMO my 1969 Whirlpool Gas Dryer is the best dryer I have ever used.

My grandmother's 1960something GE was still going when she died in 2012 with no repairs except maybe a heating element.  Whirlpool does make an awesome dryer, I just prefer the flow-thru designs better like GE and Maytag.  When I used to dry my comforter in mother's old 1966 Whirlpool I'd have to take it out and flip it because it would be damp on one side, but in my previous GE it would come out completely dry every time.  But to each his own.

Whirlpool/Kenmore top filter machines all the way. Great performance and easy to fix.

Whirlpool/Kenmore does come with a front lint filter as well.......back to front flow thru air design

they do seem to gather lint in the grooves.....but otherwise, still a great dryer, with a huge capacity....in a 27" cabinet....

I do prefer these as I am able to cover the top with Plexiglas for a clean surface....but to each his own....
