So this is a Maytag MVWC400XW4 washer today, a lot of these come in roaring but this one had no issues and I’m not sure why it was given to me. Made on 46th week of 2012. Great cosmetic condition too for being a 2012 unit. Spin and wash cycle sounded normal, spin cycle had no vibrations and wasn’t loud, I also got in a vintage Maytag (will be posted in Imperial). Once I started it worked, washed, and spun just fine. They said it was banging around but suspension rods were good and no banging in all tests so they probably were just overloading it or unevenly loading it. I did a big load on this and it was fine.

Maytag even made a glass lid Centennial VMW (MVWC450XW).

I also heard the pulsing pump (I actually like it over the newer VMW pumps that instead do the continuous grindy sound”. The newer VMW pumps make almost like a garbage disposal type sound.

This was made back when VMWs would spin before filling during sensing and with the actuator that clunks twice. The first revisions of the replacements also did this. And washplate VMWs spun before filling until 2015. These also have three spins during spin cycle (unlike the new ones that only do two for basic models). Although the really high end VMWs have weird spin programming.

The agitator versions form this time also did the three spin but now they just do one spin and this was done since 2014. The WTW4800BQ1 just spun up one, while the WTW4800BQ0 for example had three spins.

These older VMWs also literally said it was a low water washer under the lid, this hasn’t be specified since 2015. Now whirlpool tries to hide that their washers are high efficiency like many manufacturers do now. You rarely see a washer specifically labeled as “High efficiency” now.

Whirlpool’s version of this was the WTW4950XW, Kenmore’s was the 21302, Amana’s was the NTW4750YQ, and the Crosley version was the CAW12444XW. Maytag also had the MVWC360AW which is a nearly identical machine to the MVWC400XW I have and I believe that model came out in early 2013 or late 2012.

First, it has “deep clean” which was a future on all these older washplate VMWs under different names. I think it was just a gimmick and didn’t really do anything. Whirlpool used EcoBoost which was different, Kenmore was Stainboost which is probably the same as Maytag’s deep clean option.

The clean washer with affresh cycle is on all newer VMWs but originally it was only on these washplate versions. Agitator models used to not have this feature.

This one has the fabric softener option, extra rinse. It’s so old that it has the same control panel as the direct drive Maytags (I recently bought a newer Maytag direct drive used and has the same style control panel), but without the six lights underneath because it is direct drive.

I believe in 2013 they redesigned these machines, like the MVWC425BW that superseded this in 2013 had a different style control panel, board, and a designed tub. The deep clean was removed on that one. I believe that model did have very similar cycle programming to these tho.

Whirlpool did the same, their WTW4900BW (which replaced the WTW4950XW in 2013) had an entirely different control panel, it had 12 cycles. It was energy start and the control panel was black, the popular WTW5000DW had the same controls as the WTW4900BW but had different programming and had a gray control panel with no energy Star.

I believe Crosley and Amana had the older control panel on their newer ones, like the NTW4750BQ is essentially just their NTW4750YQ but with the redesigned tub, same for the Crosley CAW12444DW. The Kenmore 25102, tho, had a different control panel than the 21302 but still had the stain boost option, the control panel was redesigned, as well as tub and washplate. It didn’t have soil options.

They also sold fancier versions of these under the Cabrio and bravos brand, yes, the low end Cabrio and bravos machines were just fancier versions of these, whirlpool and kenmore had replacements for these that looked similar, but they added “deep water wash” cycle and redesigned the drums a bit. Whirlpool made the control panel black on the replacements unlike the originals.

Maytag, they did make the MVWX500BW and MVWX600BW as supposed replacement for the MVWX500XW and MVWX700XW but those were were just the MVWC425BW with a different top, a different motor, and a dispenser drawer.

The replacements had similar cycle programming but different controls for the big Whirlpool brands, they had the same low water washer thing under the lid and the same spin before filling. The original 4.3 cu ft VMWs (the original 0 models) also spun before filling.

These had the same style tubs as the first generation cabrios, but the newest cabrios also got the basket redesign. If your VMW has a first generation tub it’s made in mid 2013 or sooner. The latest version of the first generation washplate VMWs made in mid 2013 to early 2014 had the second generation style drum.
