Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support AutomaticWasher.org:

Robert, How could you possibly meet the man at 6:30, Make the deal, remove it from the basement, haul it from Prior Lake (30 miles or so), Unload it, put it in your basement, take pics and upload them by 8:15. I want to hire you as my delivery man if you can do all this that fast.

Great find, while it isn't in the best of shape, I'm glad you saved it because it's a GM Frigidaire, and it has the window lid. I know it's going to clean up well! Out of curiosity, how are you going to clean the glass? My Westy's window is MAJOR hard-water stained, and I did try vinegar and CLR which helped a little bit, but it hasn't cleared up 100%. Is there anything I'm doing wrong?

As far as cleaning the filter (was that a rhetorical question? ;-)), wet the lint, and rap the filter HARD against the sink! All of the gunk should come out. If not, RepairClinic still carries bed-of-nails filters for 1-18s. That and the agitator cap are the only GM parts I've seen though still available on there.

Yes, I know the bed-of-nails filters are a PITA to clean; each time I wash a load in the '82 Kenmore there's always a bunch of wet "sludgy" lint I have to shake out.

The Maytag's Power-Fin is much easier to clean...all of the collected lint is in one neat "blob" when I pull the filter out. I do rinse off the filter itself once a week, however.

And if you decide to look for another owner for this one as well, I'm still willing! :)

Are you going to read the news paper tomorrow?

Robert,
This is so much fun!
When it rains, it pours for you.
Thanks for the pictures.
Brent

And I might add...

Be careful not to break the mounting rail when cleaning this one...CR mentioned a "tab that is likely to break off during cleaning" when they tested the bed-of-nails equipped 1-18 in '74. Seeing as how the mounting rail protrudes out, I guess that's the "tab" they were referring to.

Hi Greg, very funny. Actually I got out of work by 5:15 and I had called the guy on his cell phone to see if I might show up early and he said he was there already. So instead of going home first, I drove the 21 miles to Prior Lake (45 min in traffic) and he had the machine all unhooked and ready to go. Back home in 30 minutes, down stairs and here we are. I’m so used to taking and posting pictures it takes all of 10 minutes.

But anyway,

Austin if your Mom approves consider the machine yours if you can find a way to transport it. I will give it a quick going over and see how it runs and let you know.

Brent, you bet I‘m going to check the paper and net tomorrow, lets keep it going!

Hi Mark, the matching dryer was a Middle of the Line, late-1970's black face Kenmore dryer.

Only one matched set per week please.

ITS GREAT TO SEE YOU GUYS GET SO EXCITED, MY CO-WORKERS THINK
I'M CRAZY, WHY WOULD ANYONE WANT TO GO TO A WASHER CONVENTION, I THINK THEY'RE THE CRAZY ONE'S
GREAT JOB ON ALL THE NEW FINDS, KEEP HUNTING!!!

Veg, the sanitize feature was a setting to clean themachine after doing laundry for someone that had an ilness in the house. You set the waetr level at a lower setting, added a cup of bleach and let it finish the rince and spin. All that splashing and such with the concentrated bleach sanitized and cleaned out the machihne.

I know I'm gonna get it for this one! But I can't he

YUCK! I wouldn't throw it away or anything. I just don't like the 70's stuff! ( Just my opinion!) No hate email please!

Yuk? I think not...

Watch what you say about this 1-18---I might be the next owner! ;-) 70's appliances (especially the washers of course) are cool anyway...

Now if it was a rare Frigidaire 24" Agitub machine, Robert should DEFINITELY keep it!

70'S STUFF

Hi Bethann, I am with you all the way on that one. I hate 70's stuff with a passion!Rusty poor quality cars. The green and gold appliances and orange carpet, dark cabinets, shag carpet,oh the list goes on!I feel sick! YUK!

Austin

Hopefully you can get it! And of course I'm happy for you! You know there are a lot of people that don't like pink appliances, but that's OK. That just means that there is more for me! Trust me if I find any 70's W/D they are all yours!

I LOVE the '70's

I like the restful natural colors of the '70's, but I do agree that a lot of things back then were built really cheaply and tended to "ugly out" rather quickly.

And Bethann, for you to make an adverse comment about a REAL Frigidaire washer! I KNOW whats in YOUR laundry room! (but I'm not gonna 'out' you) You should have such a fine washer! (I love to tease Bethann! Just in fun of course!)

Between the old Helical drive Maytags, the belt drive Whirlpools, Filter-flo GEs and the Frigidaire 1-18, the "70"s had some pretty decent washers. Every now and then, when I worked at the independant appl. dealer, some one would come in and ASK for a frigidaire washer. Every one of the people had an old 1-18 at home that still was working. Never had anyone want to repeat a WCI built machine- Hmmmmm.

Yes Joe, the spin speed did decrease with the perforated-tub models, from 1010 (the Rapidry 1000 speed) to about 660 RPM. If I'm not mistaken 660 was the fastest spin available through the 1970's on full-sized automatic washers.

Early WCI 1-18s are neat in the fact they have a window lid...call me crazy, but if I saw one I'd snap it up. I like the early WCI washer mechanism due to the fact we had one when I was little :) I prefer WCI's speckled porcelain tub over plastic.

I've got my eye open for machines around here...but there are a lot of "penny-pinchers" in my area. :( I'm still checking the used-appliance stores to see if they have "anything". Next on my list: a 1970's Norge! With any luck at all it will be easier to find than a GM Frigidaire...YAY!

Thanks everyone!

Cleaning the lint filter

I think what youd do is spray it with your faucet sparyer or take a pin and scrape it out
