Hello Folks,

I usually post on the Vacuum Forum, But am in need of washer advice...

Our 10 years old Frigidaire Gallery Washer and Dryer are nearing the end of their life - We have never really has problems, but figure it may be time to replace them while we can still purchase a normal top load, standard agitator, Non-HE machine...

We are looking at a Speed Queen AWN412 Top Load Washer - $699.99
Speed Queen ADE3LD Electric Dryer - $569.00
3.5% state sales tax (store is in urban enterprise zone so the tax is 1/2 of the NJ 7%)
Free Delivery, Haul away, and Installation -

I assume from all I have read on this site, that the Speed Queens are the last of the old school washer & dryers... My main question boils down to:

"is this a good price" ?

We take very good care of things - "How long should these last" ?

You might want to consider going one model up so you'll have the option of an extra rinse.

 

Others can advise on a fair price.

 

From what I've heard, these should be reliable old-school machines but you might have to change the belt on the washer a time or two over its life span.

in november 2012 ,when i bought mine that was the price. but i goy the awn432 because there was only 50 dollars difference.749. i offers an extra rinse and prewash, well worth the extra 50 dollars. i did have to increase the water level. it was very easy to do. there is a video on youtube that showes you how.

These are a great choice and it looks like a good price. I would only buy the extra rinse option if you feel you must use this often because of some special problem you have with rinsing.

 

Remember using an extra rinse on a TL full fill washer adds 50% more wear to the washer every load and unless you have perfectly soft water a 2nd rinse can end up leaving a mineral build up in your clothes and leave a coating inside the washer which can cause problems sooner, Full fill TL washers have been built for over 60 years with one deep rinse for a reason.

I Love Mine

I have the AWN412 ($650) and love it- When I want an extra rinse, I just wait until the washer quits and turn it back to rinse. If you use fabric softner and it goes in the first rinse, the second rinse gets rid of it. Its all a matter of personal tastes. I bought a speed queen washer, but got a Whirlpool dryer (with the lint filter on top). I like the electronic sensors in the whirlpool dryer-- Speed queen dryers doesn't have them. SQ automatic dry is based on the air temp going out the exhaust. As the clothes get drier, the temp is warmer. At a certain point the dryer cuts off. I didn't like the drum in the SQ dryer either. The porcelain enamel in the whirlpools are much smoother and slicker- another personal preference. Also, I wanted a hamper door for my dryer-- Speed Queen does not offer a dryer with a hamper door. You can't go wrong with Speed Queen for both of them.

All good reasons for getting a WP dryer, they are hard to beat, however the white drum in WP dryers is just Epoxy Power Coat, not porcelain enamel, SQs galvanized drum may not be as pretty to many but is probably more durable than EPC.

Combo52-- Thank-you for the correct information. I was not thinking when I posted that comment-- The dryer will probably quit before the paint wears off the drum. I was a lot easier to find the Whirlpool dryer as well. I had to go to a small dealer out of town to find the SQ washer, and he was out of dryers at the time.
