Hey everyone, since I got here, I'd figure I would show the 21 year old Whirlpool pair we have. Some of you may have seen my youtube videos on them too, i'll share a video in the last post.

There are some marks on the cabinets as you can see, but it is nothing major, and maybe in the future, if affordable, I'd love to get them repainted, but they still work flawlessly. and overall are still in good condition.

On both panels you can see the the Clean Touch touch pads have cracked over time, but the control themselves work 100%.

high and low speed agitation shift

I had a newer one of these with the cycle logic system. Bought in mid-2000's. My Kenmore Direct Drives that I owned I selected what wash spin speed I wanted. These started out on high and switched to low mid cycle and I never understood why. Perhaps you could offer some insight?

From what i've seen on the manual. It goes to the lower speed the last 4 minutes of the wash for extra fabric care. I think all Whirlpool brand direct drives (with the exception of low models) did this.

I just used an Inglis/Whirpool washer, for the first time today, with the same features and agitator. I don't get the reduced agitation, either? After 12 minutes of heavy agitation, what does the 4 minutes of reduced do? I also don't understand why the agitaor has all those vanes at the top? The water never gets that high.
I have a Kenmore with the dual action agitator. I would have to say, the Kenmore is much quieter, than the Inglis/Whirlpool.

agitator

My Kenmore and my Whirlpool had the same agitator as this one did. I have always thought Kenmore was quieter as well. I am sure it is something do with how they do the quiet packs. I don't really understand that part either, because i never see any sound insulation. This Whirlpool is nicer than the one I had.

DD Dave - have you ever had to change the dog ears in the agitator on this? My mom's Kenmore had to have them changed about 3 or 4 times in the short 8 year time span of the washer. My Kenmore and Whirlpool that I owned never did.

the step down is referred to as "Gentle Wash"......more of a SOAK than anything else, on a regular load, once the shift down, all wash action/rollover stops, even with the DA agitator........

the only reason for the top fins of the agitator is the SWIRL effect/look of the Surgilator

I have never had one of these machines shred anything......and I washed good size loads......eventually I changed my DA, for the larger base version from a KitchenAid....turbulent rollover on high speed, and actual movement on gentle...

joefuss: Yep, we had the agitator dogs replaced in 2002,and that is the ONLY repair this machine has had so far.

rpms: I think they just put the vanes on that high part of the agitator just for looks, however I prefer the Whirlpool agitator over the Kenmore only because I like the taller design and those vanes, just something more to watch :) and also, in many vids I have seen, it seems the Whirlpool agitator turns much more freely than the Kenmore one does.

Nick! I was actually wondering if you were on here, cool that you are!

Yogitunes: I do know what you mean about the slower agitation, though I am more than okay with it since I figure that by that point the high speed got off most of the dirt that it needed to. I have actually never seen a difference in cleaning compared to the ones that do high speed for all the wash ad same here, this machine has never torn up anything we own, and being a 3-speed machine, it is excellent for delicates.

One concern I have though with what ya said is, about the KitchenAid agitator and i'm not fully sure if a motor for a Whirlpool was meant to handle the extra drag from the larger base for its high speed.

We have the electronic version of your set, the LA9800TX. You are right, the last 5 minutes of the regular wash cycle is done at low agitation speeds. Right now we don't have a low speed on our machine. If you select the gentle wash cycle it'll fill, sit there for about 7 minutes without agitating and then go into a neutral drain and spin. I think it needs a new transmission. So the last 5 minutes on ours is a 5 minute soak, and then the machine continues the cycle.
Sometime this winter I'm going to put a new transmission in it and hopefully the machine will last for another 10-12 years.

in actuality, the larger base agitator was for any 2 or 3 speed agitation, as long as the 2 lowest ones were used for agitation, any speed for spin.......

I put this in any machine I use......even in high speed, although some argue about strain on the tranny, but never had that issue, but there is no difference between Kenmore, Whirlpool, KitchenAid, all the same underneath, one tranny for all...

if you ever come across one, fill your machine with just water, and run the machine on high speed agitation, switching out the agitators back and forth....
you will be suprised at the tidal wave......

whirlcool: That's not the transmission, that is probably a problem with your motor or maybe your control board.

yogitunes: that's pretty interesting to know. Is your KA agitator one of those cool green ones?
