Our Maytag Dishwasher Bit Me Today!

Nobody ever told me that dishwashers can bite!

This morning when I opened the door to our Maytag Dishwasher(Quiet Series 300) I felt a sharp pain in my pinky on my right hand. When I tried to pull my hand away from the dishwasher door it wouldn't let go! I finally jerked my hand back and saw a hairline crack in the black plastic top of the dishwasher door, with a piece of skin off my finger still stuck in it. Seems like when you pull the door open, the crack opens up and will grab skin and then when you are finished opening the door the crack closes up grabbing any skin that may be in the way. And of course this black plastic piece is part of the electronic control panel. When you look at the door, all you see is a small hairline crack. I wonder how this can be fixed without having to replace the control panel, which works fine.

Evidently your machine has finally gotten fed up with having to deal with everyday leftovers and decided it wanted to see what fresh meat tasted like!

On the other hand, post a pic of the offending nibbler and hopefully someone here can offer you a suggestion on what to do to remedy your problem and possibly glue its proverbial mouth shut. lol

Just be nice to it in the meantime since you said that it hasn't affected the operation of the machine.

OK, here is a photo of the crack. It's in the black trim between the control panel and the black trim piece that goes on top of the DW door. It only extends on the top maybe 1/8" but is mostly in the front as you can see. Repairable?

OH YES! Dishwashers do bite.

The Hobart at my work bit me recently. Someone had just put the large mixer bowl(60QT) through when I went to wash a knife. As I was pushing the rack in to the entrance of the dishwasher some 160f water kicked out by the large bowl came through the splash curtain and right onto my hand. NOT FUN! LOL!
However this is the first time I've seen one use it's control panel to bite. A good polymer adhesive should repair this. There is no need to replace the PCB controller inside.

Thanks for the advice. I noticed that the part is only available with the control panel for about $180.00. In the photo I had to pull on the handle a little bit to show the crack. If you don't do that you really can't see the crack at all. So if I glue it up, it should look ok.

I hope the super glue works. This happened in my family with Maytag. Eventually, the latch will become harder and harder to open. By the time my mom called someone, the technician had to pry the door open and she did have to spend about $180. Makes you wonder if this is a plot to get you to buy a new dishwasher. Also, have you ever been "bit" by an airplane? It looks like flight attendants have to be careful not to have their fingers nearby when the close the door.

Now that you mention it, the door handle does seem to be harder to operate than it used to. I think I'll by a new latch kit for it. It's only about $25.00 or so. The last Maytag DW we bought(1992) didn't have all this plastic on it. I know times have changed.

We've been happy with this DW so far. It still operates properly. So we'll see how it goes from here on out.

As for airplanes biting, yes they can! There are a lot of sharp edges behind these cabin walls and underneath the wing. In my career, I've seen two people get fingers mangled in the seat recline mechanism when they put their fingers in there to try to fix a non reclining seat.
