Those consoles with the woodgrain debuted about 1980 or so, and 1984 was the last year GE used them (switched to the black-and-chrome/stainless look in 1985).  There is one dryer more-lowly than yours; it has the same functions and choices, but has the shorter console.  That's pretty much a workhorse dryer, 2 cycles, 3 heats (counting air), and a start switch.  No frills.

That dryer model, and the "matching" 2-cycle / 1-speed / 3-temp / 3-level washer were very common.  I would consider them moreso as the "everywhere GE pair" than truly BOL.
