Hi Guys i have just purchased of E bay an old Bendix Dishwasher, i believe it to be pre 1985 so appologies if its not and therefore in the wrong catergory. Older dishwashers are very rare over here in the UK, but please take a look at the photos and see what you think. The owner is posting me the manual so i may know more details soon.

here is my 1989 hotpoint making way for older bendix

here are some photos of my current 1989 dishwasher i picked up at the local rubbish tip. I had the front pannel re sprayed with the kitchen cabinets.

now some more of the bendix

it has a split pannel door , the lower half of which moves out as you pull the door down the help support the main door. It has hot warm and delicate cycles. Delicate being (as fas as i can tell) some sort of diverter valve to reduce water either to or from main pump whic gives a softer wash (but noisier)

inside the Bendix with big filter

here you can see the larger but much coarser filter , and the huge lower spray are which pumps up to the upper arm, this happens through an apperture which can be closed

lower dish rack

a shot of the lower dish rack , notice the white block in the centre which allows water to go up to the upper spray arm

upper rack

this rack is adjustable in height and so far can hold wine glasses ok ( something new machines struggle with )not that i drink a lot of wine ahem ahem!!!!

in its new home

The Bendix is in its new home. I have ran a test cycle.
It uses a lot more water than modern macine with a lot more fill and empty cycles to flush the filter. Its so much noiser, the water spray against the cabinet sides sounds like a pressure washer againt a window pane ( it makes my kettle rattle! )(Thats NOT a euphamism! ) (ok it is!!)It burps as it fills up, and during the dry cycle the heating element makes a humming chattering noise ( i will investigate this weekend )It needs a new drain hose as original is unflexible and either twist or pops out of drain pipe (first wash flooded kitchen!)

And finally do you think i should re paint the door white as per original , or blue to match cabinets. Visit the below link to see my kitchen ( ignore Media link its a put file fault only vist photos link )

cheerio !!!

That is very fun!

Wow, Richard I have never seen a Bendix dishwasher before. Congrats, that is a great find! Looks great in your kitchen as well.

Low gravity dishwasher?

That's rare how the water "jumps" to the middle spray arm. Before the closed circuit was introduced on dishwashers, I can remember that the water was sprayed from the top into the middle spray arm. For witch I can remember my laws of gravity, I think that the bendix dishwasher skipped some sciences classes.

A Bendix dishwasher---who knew?
"Uses lots of water" = gets the dishes really clean! Something the new machines now sold here in the US can't do!

If noise is a problem a jacket of insulating material works wonders.

Hey I love your kitchen and appliances!!!

Where in Durham are you ??

I'm not far from Durham, Hartlepool actually

Take Care
Dan

What a cool dishwasher; love those pushbuttons! I see many similarities to older Whirlpools on the machine, especially the spray arm and the way the water is diverted to the upper spray arm! Does it pause and reverse the motor for drain?

I think you should paint it blue like you did on your Hotpoint, to match the cabinets!

Rick, Congratulations on your Bendix dishwasher. Glad it does not feature tumble action washing. I like your blue dishes with the rose and green stripes.

Austin, very sharp eyes there spotting the WP-influenced wash arms.

Speaking of similarities

Friends recently replaced a GE Monogram(Bosch) from about 1994 that was nearly identical in apprearance to Hotpoint. Their US model did not have the water softener. The filter was stainless steel instead of plastic. Otherwise the racks, spray arms, silverware basket & dispensers were the same.

The console was similar with a cycle progression indicator, but had paino key pushbuttons for the cycles in lieu of the rotary dials etc. So interesting to see the variations from around the globe!

Thanks chaps , i do have some where a Which magazine ( similar to CA ) which shows earlier bendix dishwashers ,this one is from the era when Thorn appliances must have bought out Bendix. Upon further investigation the door pannel is not easily removed from the cabinet like on the hotpoint but forms the chasis to hold springs timer etc so not sure if brave enough to dismantle to get it to the spray shop, if not i will mask and re spray it white in garden ( as the blue is old Ford transit van blue!)
The investigation showed the saftey switch loose so now it stops as you open the door ( and with that big spray thats useful as first attempt spray nearly hit ceiling.)

Dan i live near Consett , what appliances do you have? and Magic clean i know the machine you refer to, my Mums neighbours have the Bosch version which is vertually identical to my old hotpoint apart from the piano key and i think extra sound insulation , funny they are a bit snobbish regarding applinaces and think hotpoint cheap , did nt want to tell them both machines were the same, in fact a lot of the workings on both are made by Siemens!

Oh and Westytoploader it has a seperate drain pump !

Anyone any ideas why the heating element hums and buzzes , i cannot see any loose wires or bad contacts, also it is not a fan dry machine, i know some electric ovens used to humm as there elements got on a bit so its perhaps only that, but i am always paranoid around newly aquired appliances !!

Ah cool....

I dont have any vintage appliances :-(

But I'm soon getting a Semi-Intergrated AEG Dishwasher with vintage brown controls :-D.

I have a 2002 Hoover Washer Dryer
1997 Parnall Compact Dryer (creda)
Electrolux Slot-in Ceramic hob Cooker
LG Combination microwave ( I Love that :-D)
Zanussi Freestanding Frost Free Fridge/Freezer
Whirlpool Intergrated Fridge/Freezer
Candy Freestanding Frost Free Freezer

Vacuum wise I have:
Rubbish DC03 that is held together with sticky tape
Samsung 1200W Wideclean Bagged upright, a brilliant cleaner, but rather bulky.
Morphy Richards - Goblin Compact Cylinder 1400W fills its purpose for a £20 cleaner
