Out with the old and in with the Old

I removed my 1960 GE double oven, mainly because of the color, medium brown. All my other kitchen appliances are white. I found a 1988 GE double oven, self-cleaning at RESTORE (Habitat for Humanity) here in Sacramento. I saw a Amana Touch-Matic there for $1.00 if anyone wants it.

Cleaning out

After removing the oven, I cleaned out the old space. Notice the pigtail in the space, it was connected to the oven pigtail with taped connections!! When I installed the "new" oven I direct connected the oven pigtail to the wall outlet in the space. I had to cut the opening larger by 5" in height because of the selfcleaning feature.

New oven in place

So here is the new oven. Yes the handle is bent. While driving home, it tipped over in the back of the truck, bending the handle. GE no longer stocks it, but it was priced at $50.00. I am trying to find one, and also will try to straighten it out. It is vinyl coated steel tube, and matches my 1998 Whirlpool side-by-side refer. I like that this oven still uses knobs to control the temperature and functions. It does have an electronic clock, which still works. It is needed for the selfcleaning function. The old oven had an analog clock that did not work.

I had to rebuild the bottom of the cabinet, and shorten the lower drawers.

White theme

Notice that those handles match the refer handles, and the overall white theme is complete. Other appliances not shown are white dishwasher (Kenmore) white cooktop (GE). Down at the end are my Maytag LAT washer (orbital drive) and matching dryer. Oh yes at the side is the Amana cookmatic in black, but it still fits in.

Cooktop and Oven available

I have the matching cooktop and oven that I just removed. The cooktop has pushbutton control. If anyone wants this set, please let me know. The cooktop condition isb fair, the finish is scratched. One burner is broken, I believe replacements still are available (calrod). The oven, as I mentioned has a broken clock. It still cooks well and is in fair to good condition for a 46 year old unit.

If you would like this set, I will give it to you, and you must arrange for pick-up.

I replaced cooktop

Thanks. My kitchen, including the laundry area at the end, is about 25' long by about 10' wide. There is a breakfast area at the other end. Above the cooktop is a pass-thru to the family room. And, there is a lot of storage. Next to the oven is a 6'wide pantry. Here is a picture from GE of my cooktop. It is similar to my old one, a coil unit. These are still well built units (made in China!!). They cook well, but of course need cleaning down below the coils. The whole cooktop opens on hinges, the old one did not, you had to stick your hand in and try to clean under there. I suppose a flat top would be easier, but I probably would figure out a way to break it.
