Funny to be basically an All-American looking washer, when it would like most of this breed, be more of a Hitachi-looking machine like other Japanese brands…
Actually that Panasonic washer was available in the early 90's and was impeller based if I remember right. I did see it in person at a store in Maine back then and thought the very same thing when looking at it that it was Whirlpool based, but its not. Whirlpool had nothing to do with this Japanese built washer by Matsushita if I recall right.
A Panasonic washing machine in the US!? That is so cool and awesome for me I am a diehard Panasonic fan! Was there a matching dryer that ever did came with this when those were sold back in the day? I'm now curious to know, I'm also curious to know where this washer was made at if someone can shed some light here But if I were to take a wild guess here, it could've been built either by themselves in Japan or it could've been built by Whirlpool in the US. The reason why I think it could've been built by Whirlpool is because Panasonic has had a deal with them before. At least from their vacuum division line. Whirlpool in 1990 sold their plant in Danville Kentucky to Matsushita aka Panasonic and continued making vacuums for not only Kenmore but for themselves as well. It's possible that since the purchase, Panasonic probably wanted to expand their home appliance line so they might've reached out to Whirlpool to see if they could see themselves in the US laundry market just as much as Kenmore. But I guess maybe it didn't work out well as they hoped? I honestly don't know but that's just a guess.
Panasonic actually for a hot minute tried to launch a full-line of regular-sized US appliances right around 1990. Don't believe this item was necessarily part of it--they had stoves, dishwashers, and refrigerators (the stove I recall was one with the heating elements in cast-iron plates). They sourced the units from various of the manufacturers in the US/Canada.
I would also love to see lines of Panansonic Major Appliances in the US. Especially now that every manufacturer seems to be dumbing down FL washers, even Miele.
I still have and use my beautiful blue Panasonic electric pencil sharpener given to me as a Christmas present in the mid-Sixties.
Someone on FB really ought to reach out to seller for more pictures, especially under the bonnet. Why people selling washing machines and dishwashers don't show appliances with door open I don't know.
I remember in 1986 there was Panasonic labeled air conditioners manufactured by General Electric. They were larger air conditioners, the same units as the old GE Super Thrust models. We had 3 GE Super Thrust units in my parents house and they had that typical GE tan case with the aluminum grille in the back with the red GE logo, my neighbor had the same air conditioners but there was a Panasonic label across the back. Within a few years after that Panasonic started making all the air conditioners for GE.
The proportions of this look very similar to the early 70s Whirlpool portable washers that required activating a lever on the back once the washer was moved into place in order to stabilize it for use.
