For starters, it was written by a Patent Attorney. Second, what we see is often not the whole application. Third, when you patent a design, it has to be described down to the bedrock so that lower life forms do not burrow down and find ways of circumventing your patented design.
 
We were just talking about this washer last night...

This machine uses a ribbed tub to scrub the clothes - orbitally moving around the center axis (think Kelvinator centric agitator) and the cup in the center of the column is for dispensing detergent.

The rumor is, that this machine never went into production because cleaning diapers was an issue. Let's leave it at that then ;-)
