I am really surprised to see Nutro dog food listed with all the other "house brands".

I wouldn't feed a dead dog "Ol' Roy" from Wal Mart.

I can't believe that all of these foods are made by just one company! Consumers with questions can also call Menu foods at(866) 895-2708.

Reminds me of an incident Hill's Science Diet had with some contaiminated corn a few years ago that killed a bunch of pets.

Whirlcool

When did Science Diet have a problem? I've been in the vet business since 1986 and haven't heard of this - although when I was in vet school I didn't pay much attention to the news, but would think it would have been mentioned to the class considering the animal health environment we were in. Mosty vets carry Science Diet and their Prescription Diet line.

Whoops, I can't believe I did that!
It wasn't Hill's Science Diet, but in 1995 Natures Recipe had a massive recall due to contaiminated grain in their food.
I used to feed my dogs Science Diet, but I think they changed the formulation about 7 or 8 years ago and my dogs stopped eating it. The kibble was a darker color than it used to be.
My vet used to carry the regular Science Diet line but dropped it but continues to carry the prescription line. ID, K, etc.

Thanks Whirlcool

I always tell my clients to stick with the big name dog and cat food companies like Purina, Pedigree, Iams, and Science Diet. They have better quality control and do not have the problems that smaller manufacturers have - usually. They test all batches of grain and test each lot of food to try and prevent problems.

In the last recalls that I know of (1998, fall 2006) the grain was contaminated with a mold that secretes aflatoxin, which can cause liver failure. It will be interesting to see what has been causing the kidney failure in the Menu Foods products. I need to ask several of my clients what they feed their animals, I've been seeing several cases of kidney failure in the last two months, some have recovered and some haven't.

Thank god

When I saw that liked to have freaked as I feed my boston terrier Iams so I they We are safe from anything

My Boris gets

Purina ONE, and only Purina ONE. I may be going on faith alone, but I believe Purina ONE is one of the best of the supermarket cat foods. The "Healthy Weight Managment" version, because like me, he's a bit "round."

I feel very sorry for the people who have had their dear companions fall ill or die from these suspicious foods.

BTW - my six cats and two dogs get nothing but Science Diet. I think it is one of the best pet foods made. This statistic is about 9 years old, but Science Diet spends more on nutrition research than all the other pet food manufacturers. At the time I got that little tidbit, Science Diet was ranked number 5 in sales amoung pet food manufactures, but number one in research and science.

There was one time in college that I was between jobs. I had to skip a few meals to feed my cat. That is one of the few times I bought a cheap store brand of pet food, and I felt a little guilty doing it.

Purina one is a great food, I worked at a clinic that started selling it when it first came on the market. I don't push the Science Diet on my clients too much as long as they feed a good quality food.

Over the years, we have fed Natural Balance, but stopped that one because it gave our dogs horrible breath. Then we switched over to Natural Balance for several years. We liked that one cause it really helped out our Black Lab with his "dandruff" on his coat.
It also caused our three dogs to put on some excess weight. So about 6 months ago or so we started with IAMS Large Breed for the Labs and IAMS 7+ for our 14 year old Dalmatian. They seem to be doing really well with it.
We did do Science Diet back when we had four Dalmatians back in the late 80's, early 90's. They liked it just fine until Hill's reformulated it and when we put the "improved" stuff down, they just turned their noses up at it and looked at us with that "Are you trying to kill us" look. Now I was at the Houston dog show and Hill's had a booth. I asked them about the reformulation and they denied that they changed it. But the kibble was darker and my dogs wouldn't eat it anymore. Finally about 5 years later a Hill's rep did admit that they changed it "several years ago". My own personal opinion about Science Diet is that it is a good food, but I have moved on.
I asked my vet about what she thought was good food, and she said "Don't feed Ol'Roy!" And then said that Purina One is probably the best food if you MUST buy grocery store food, next she liked Natual Balance and IAMS and Eukabana. She even liked Pedigree. But I find that if we try to feed that, our dogs get dry skin.
This is pretty much in line with what we are seeing in this thread.
But most people aren't very educated when it comes to dog food. Every time I go to Wal Mart and see someone with a 40 lb bag of "Ol' Roy" (on sale for $7.49) I shudder and think "That poor dog!".

The list has been updated

Skip, I too feed my dog Iams and was concerned when I saw this updates list.

There was a sign at the local PetSmart managers office indicating that this recall only applies to canned (wet) food. The listed dry foods are still safe to use. Translation: They will not offer exchanges or refunds for the brand names listed if it is dry formulations.

Has anyone else heard this?

I think it is only the puch food with the gravy's and the small cans of dog/cat food with the gravy. Not the larger cans of food.

My cats get Kirkland brand dry kibble. They also get Friskies canned food as an occasional treat (they have to ask for it ;-).

I have some Kirkland canned food but they have never liked it much. It's now a few years old and probably should be thrown out.

A few years back, maybe more than ten, there was a problem with cat food formulations. I think there was an assumption that cats didn't need a certain amino acid, I think it was Taurine. In any case, cats feed exclusively on many cat food formulations became malnourished because of this.

Lesson: natural foods (meat, fish, innards) are probably a good addition to any pet's diet, in moderation. Science often makes mistakes and the pets pay for it.

Cats especially are canervores-why cat food makers are putting grain into them-beyond me.Guess as a filler since the real meat is expensive and won't keep.I bought a 20lb bag of Food Lion dry cat food for the 7 neighborhood stray cats the neighbors and I have been feeding.glad the dry food wasn't on the recall list.Well-guess the cats near me get their meat from the squirrels, mice, and birds they catch.I put water out for them-but they still drink out of the water puddles and driveway puddles-would think the cats could get intestinal worms that way.

Honey has eaten Nutro Natural Choice as long as I've had her--only the dry kibble (known as "Tasties"). Since she tends to be a full-figured gal, she gets the Light which she practically inhales.

Her vet said to stay away from canned or wet food as it isn't good for their teeth. Honey's thrived on Nutro so I'll stick with it.

I used to feed the cats Nutro Natural Choice dry. But then one of the cats scratched both ears bald, sometimes she'd make them bleed. A bath with medicated shampoo helped, but only temporary relief. In a few weeks she'd be scratching again. Ruled out fleas. Finally the vet said she might have a food allergy, something to do with reacting to a certain protein. I switched over to Wysong Vitality dry and the scratching stopped. The hair grew back. Now all I feed them is the Wysong. They also like a tablespoon of cat gravy put on top of the dry food in the morning, makes for a nice treat. The gravy comes in a bottle that looks a lot like salad dressing...

When I got Parker from the SPCA back in 2001 he was an awful mess, he'd been there for months and done the round of SPCA loan-outs but never adopted, probably because he had fairly regular diahrea and his coat looked awful. A friend mentioned Nutro Lamb & Rice (dry) which I bought and haven't looked back since. The change was astounding, the diahrrea disappeared almost immediately and his coat improved dramatically over the following couple of weeks. I'm an ardent label reader on everything and I checked labels for all the different brands, Purina, Science Diet, Iams etc. and Nutro was the only one as I recall that had lamb as the first ingredient listed and rice as the second, all the others had those ingredients listed further down and usually accompanied by some other grain like wheat. My sister, a vets assistant, was over one day telling me I should switch him to some expensive brand I'd never heard of, they sell, extolling it's virtues, gave me a sample bag which I never gave Parker. I cut the two labels off both bags and gave them her to look at and said which would you feed your dog now.. The highly priced brand they were flogging was again a big mix of grain and corn meal.
