Post in another thread about Maytag's latest offering had one thinking. Just what do people do about pet hair nowadays when it comes to laundry?

Old school top loading washers to various degrees coped rather well with pet hair. What was left often was dealt with by tumble drying.

H-axis washers don't seem to cope with pet hair well at all on average. Local laundromat frequently has customers from several local dog walking or sitting services. Trust me you don't want to put your wash in a machine after that lot has been trough.

Consumer Reports seems to believe everyone has time to vacuum or otherwise manually remove pet hair before things go into the wash.

Sean, both the SQ & Maytag specified pet care dryers have specific cycle/button that's used for cleaning the pet hair off garments before being put in the washer and that specific setting is air only.

Unfortunately my daughter can’t thoroughly shake out the grass or even all the droppings from her Guinea Pigs so if you saw our washer and probably knew what all that could be doing to the innards of the venting in our dryer, you’d probably not find this fit for posting in Dirty Laundry!

I tell her to shake the bedding outside and she washes and dries all this about every other day, and it doesn’t help that it’s going to be uncomfortably cold out, wet and snowy too in the next few months…

I'll still probably be washing pet hair out clothing for a while, even though it has been 4 months since Canyon crossed the Rainbow Bridge...

In the Ogden Laundry, the most effective machines at removing pet hair are the 2 Filter-Flos, followed by the '66 Inglis with the Magic-Mix brush filter.  Next would be the Bendix combo.  The Westinghouse Laundromat and GE Combo are just OK and sadly, the 51 Frigidaire Unimatic is the worst...

The old

Top loading washers like FF or some of the old Kenmores and whirlpool washers that had a pump running continuously..recirculating wash and rinse water (waterfall flow) passing over a removable filter, I think would work well?
Or keep the pet outside !😂

We have had corgi mixes with the double coat for years. They get regular brushing but sleep on the bed, etc. We have been through our old Maytag Neptune and our LG front loaders and pet hair has never really been a problem. Between washing and drying, it seems to resolve quite well.

Pet Hair

Well, currently we have a large lab and a great pyrenees. So, we know about dog hair. We try to vacuum daily, and that does make a large difference. Our clothes generally do not have pet hair on them because I always use at least 1/2 a dryer sheet and the reduce static option is always on. I find that dryer sheets have a greater effect when you use a higher heat option. So typically our fleece blankets are roasted on high heat. Otherwise, I brush the dogs at least once a week to keep fur deposits down.

As I stated in the other thread, our old Duet did royals with removing pet hair. It would flush quite a bit right down the drain, and leave just a little on the door with loads that had more dog fur. The rest would be removed in the dryer. However, these newer washers have such small drain holes that barely anything will pass through them besides water. I even have an issue with grass remaining on clothes, which was certainly not an issue with the Duet.
