Broil under glass!

That was Philcos claim to fame!, also...the broiler slides out and there is a griddle that will set on top of it called the Jiffy Griddle !

A neighbor had a model a year or two newer. The oven had expanded to 23 inches wide. It had the broil under glass feature which CU said did nothing for performance. It did give you something else to clean since spatters and pops would burn onto the glass whereas if they hit the coils, they vaporized. We used the pull out griddle one night. It makes an excellent kitchen heater with all of that heat coming out under the griddle which is then outside the oven. When we turned the burgers, some of the juice fell on the oven door, opened to the broil stop, which was very hot from the heat radiating downward from the broil unit so that bit of juice immediately cooked onto the inner door and had to be cleaned once everything cooled.

Her stove had the yellow paint around the 5 heat click position surface unit controls and over the years it began to rub off from constant cleaning.

I'd love one...

I'm probably as much of a Philco Phan as I am Hotpoint fan. I'd love a Philco appliance. I've got quite a few Philco TVs and radios. They're great as we all know.
Everything Philco I've ever seen was of great quality. (OK, OK, their Predicta picture tubes were CRAP) Strangely, my Sister, Grandparents and first three employers all had Philco refrigerators. I suppose they sold big out here.
The 1954 Crosley I own is an AVCO unit and looks EXTREMELY similar in its interior to PHILCO AVCO refrigerators of the same time.
I DID manage to get a PHILCO range cookbook. Maybe I'll dig it out tonight and see what their home-economists whipped up in the 1950s.
