It's been a right plague here in Canada recently - seemingly endless calls from 'spoofed' numbers that look like legit local to you area code numbers or better still, Government agencies. Most of the time it's a robocall urging you to press 1 to speak to an agent and avoid imminent arrest and prosecution. We've been getting the time-old time-share vacation property scam again, too. It's been quite some time since Karen from Microsoft called....
My mobile has been getting lots lately and I have been answering them, alas, because I have a number of irons in the fire and am waiting for callbacks from plumbers, electricians, health-care professionals, etc.
If I am feeling particular bored, I'll press 1 to talk to however answers and keep them on the phone for as long as I can. After all, they are trying to 'work' so what better revenge than to keep them from earning their dishonest living?
The government says there will be new measures to control these calls, but they are expecting our phone/internet service providers to come up with the solutions, so that's likely not to happen. If it does, of course the telcos will triple their already-outrageous rates claiming "we had to invest in new technology".
