Platinum Whirlpool BD set?

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support AutomaticWasher.org:

WOW!!!!....how beautiful......someone needs to grab them....a matched set, in platinum, with the books....and seems in very good condition.......

Those are really neat Ben!! I am a little bit surprised (and enthused) that you're going to give them a home. We don't have a lot of platinum machines in the club.

Before I bought my Kenmores in 1986, I had bought a WP set a notch or two down from these, in Toast. Circuit City was selling the toast at the price of white, and white was on backorder. The washer had a temp knob instead of the push buttons, but was otherwise similar. Circuit C had matched that washer, a large capacity, with a 5.9 cu. ft. standard dryer. I cancelled these when I saw a sale at Sears, but I have often wondered what it would have been like to have that set.

Funny that there are lot of the model above (I think it is an LA7680) but I have only seen one or two ever of the LA5580 that I had bought.

Let us know how these turn out!

Where will you put them???

@ Patrick - I have NO idea. Seriously. I'm completely out of room even before I brought home that Westy fridge.

@ Jon - when you develop a cure for this disease (curse), please, let us know!

@ Gordon - cool story, and to think, if you had gone toast, maybe you'd have more Whirlpools than Kenmores? :p

I'll post photos of the set when I get home.

Platinum WP Pair

These were very popular machines here in this area and we still have customers with them, especially the dryer after the washers have been replaced. But you know the rule Ben one in and one goes out, but I am willing to give you a pass on the two out if you sell us one combination laundry appliance.

Gordon - cool story, and to think, if you had gone toast, ma

Hey Ben, LOL! Yep, I have wondered the same thing.

I have never been the most open-minded guy when it comes to the world of laundry and washing machines ("no really?!?! You don't say Gordon!") but when I bought that WP set, I was somewhat excited because the washer had a manual filter. I was not happy about the standard cap dryer, and I really wanted KMs like my Mother's.

When the Sears sale came, I saw my chance. The dryer was a MUCH better deal - large cap., nice drop down hamper door like the soon-to-be yours platinum dryer, and with WrinkleGuard. It was $9 more expensive. The washer was also $9 more (I was making like $6 an hour, part time back then), but lacked one water level from the WP, but I didn't care, I wanted the KM.

I haven't been sorry, but it would be cool to the toasties. I have never seen anything in a WP in Toast, though a have a couple KMs.

Ben -

That is it exactly. Most all of those are standard capacity (LA5310 or LA5700/10), but the one I had selected was large capacity with the winged Surgilator. That machine is mid-80s (the Whirlpool indent on the cabinet is gone), so it could be! I think the 5700/5580 shared the same panel, though I don't know if they mention capacity on them like WP sometimes does.

Love the Totally Awesome detergent - they must be frequenters of Dollar Tree or similar.

Funny that you found this so fast.

Nice set Ben !

That picture say's it all they got the whirlpool spark shine in that shot.

Great washer to a good owner.

Cant what to see more.

Best to you.

Great Find!
I remember wanting this set so bad!
Back in time in New Orleans looking them on the showroom at D. H. Holmes department store.
Seems like yesterday.
Enjoy!

Very quick update

So - the set. Pretty clean cabinets. The seller's cart left a few marks on the front of the washer, but it isn't that big of a deal. The washer is mechanically sound. The dryer is in need of some service - rollers, etc. But, that's to be expected after 25 years of use.

A bit of commentary - but honestly the magic 'finger' filter is one of the WORST designs Whirlpool came up with. Sure it may have been effective for a few months, but after awhile it becomes a moisture trap due to excessive soap and lint build-up, and was not accessible for cleaning without removing the tub. At least when Maytag went to a similar design in the early 90's you could remove the filters with the tub in place.

Built in obsolescence! Guaranteed new Whirlpool washer in 5 years. haha

End of rant.

After a few hours of cleaning off the cement left behind from Grandpa's dirty jeans, the tub looks good. I did some spot repairs using silicone to seal up the outer tub lip, and the rest of the washser will get thrown back together for a water test later this week.

I usually don't do a progressive clean-up post, but this seemed like a fun idea. I have a crazy idea for a video of this machine when I'm done, so if the water test works out, watch out!

Ben,

I just love these tear down posts. It's so interesting to see what lurks underneath.

Excellent job your doing and the photo's look great.

Love what I see in the background too!

WOW Ben,

That machine wass really caked with residue. I have never seen one of those filters to ever look that bad. I am told that Charlotte has pretty decent water, but each of the filters I've seen have been clean, and their original color, even recently. I can see why you'd be annoyed by this one though, for sure.

The rusty tub edges are a common thing in these reverse-curl tubs. They debuted in both standard and large capacity machines with the baseplate re-design in later 1981, and I've had a love/hate relationship with them. They are great because you can hook the tub ring clips to them anywhere...they fit even on areas on the tub ring where there isn't a special notch, so if a section is badly rusted, just skip it and put two clips on either side of the rust instead. They suck because the foam tub ring gasket retains moisture, and eventually just promotes rust. I don't think I documented it in pictures, but I have "rebuilt" those edges in a few machines with two part epoxy putty so they won't leak and so the tub ring gasket has a surface to rest on. If you use the putty with wet fingers it molds like pottery clay and can be made smooth and almost like an uninterupted surface from the original tub.

From what I can see, your centerpost looks great! I don't know about the seals, but if there is no sign of detergent residue way up in the agitator, and there is no black grease splattered inside it, you're doing great.

I said it before, but COOL MACHINE!
