Its taken me a while to get this to work and I suspect there still will be some bugs to work out, but I've figured out a way to have the Discuss-o-Mat automatically convert links and youtube videos right in your posts. The links will automatically become clickable and the youtube videos will automatically create a viewer. So to create links just paste the link in your text, such as here is today's Minneapolis weather forecast http://classic.wunderground.com/cgi-bin/findweather/getForecast?query=msp&wuSelect=WEATHER. I did this by simply pasting the url right into the message box. When you do a preview and or post, it will automatically convert itself into a clickable link.

For youtube videos, just paste the normal youtube url and don't use the advanced embed codes. This will automatically convert it into a youtube playable video right inside your post. See the image below for more information. My goal was to make this work similar and as slick as the way it works in Facebook.

Anyways, I will need help testing this so please experiment here in this thread. Post your favorite links (clean links only please ;-D) and your favorite youtube videos. When I see something looks strange I will try and fix it as soon as I can.

Oh and Preview should work for these link conversions so you can now see how it is going to look before you post it.

Questions, Comments? Thanks everyone for your help!

Let's see how this works. This is a link from the browser:

And here is the link that is found right under the video, it's a shortcut.

Both work!!

And now for the embed link:

<iframe width="420" height="315" src="" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Even that works, albeit it gives a smaller picture. Wonderful work Robert!

Thanks Louis and Phil for your help, those look good! It should even work with the Advanced Editing Bar turned on, unlike before.

I had that turned off, so let's try again.

Works like a charm!

And now the link to all the videos the maker of these two:

http://www.youtube.com/user/progresssauger/videos

Now there is something that doesn't seem to work. Does it recognize youtube links as videos that it has to embed? It doesn't become a clickable link.

Ooooh you found something Louis, thank you! That might be a challenge to differenciate between plain old links and youtube videos if the link is to youtube itself, but I'll work on that.

Robert, what happens to videos marked non-embeddable by their owners? Anyway here's my test.

Test Youtube's feature to start from a midpoint:

(If the second video starts from the beginning the feature isn't working.)

Advanced Editing Bar ON

First preview gave me a link only. Clicked again the Update & Preview and

the linked YouTube video was viewable(embedded).

Maybe you are working on this as I type? will stop testing, now.

No at this time its not going to support any fancy features such as starting a video in the middle, nor will it be able to convert links to youtube.com into clickable links. You will still need to use the embed code for that. If a youtube user has embed turn off, the video screen that gets posted will simply say that, as that is a youtube generated message. I will work on seeing if I can get the system to recognize the difference between a video and a link, but that is going to be a challenge.

Robert, I've never gotten this feature to work outside of Youtube, even with embed code (even though they include this option when you copy/paste). No idea if it's a problem or limitation on their end.

Great job btw. :)

Switch ON /OFF -works both ways

Robert:

Thanks for the info.

Got a question: Is switch function working for the windows os systems? I'm using a PowerPc Mac, 10.5.8 - can't upgrade - so it doesn't matter to me, but is anyone else able to embed with switching advanced editing bar on and off? For me, I can embed a YouTube video whether I switch ON or OFF.

or...how about some Five of Hearts waffles

..can't do a personal vid, but we have a Vitantonio Five of Hearts Waffle maker, perfect for this weeks

embedded wishes: Happy Hearts of Waffles to everyone... :-)

Hi Phil, I'm a bit confused by your question. Are you saying it works fine on your Mac system and you are just asking if it works fine on Windows systems? It works fine on my Windows systems. I can switch the Advanced Editor on and off with a YouTube video in the message box and both preview and post normally.

Just sayin' and wondering if it was just my OS, but your reply implies it's the same for the Windows OS ...so is this message needed anymore, if it's not true now? :-) Thanks ! Message ON/OFF

Robert :    BANZAI! ("ten-thousand years to Robert!") - you're welcome, that little feature just helped to expand the aw.org horizon... now if it doesn't affect your servers and performance or anything, it's perfect! :-)
