POD 10/09/2019: Norge Washer & Gas Dryer

Good morning, Norge experts! Three questions about these sleek beauties.

1) What year are they from? (My guess is ‘62-‘64-ish)

2) Is that a dispenser on the top left side of the washer’s console and what did it dispense?

3) There appears to be two openings on top of the dryer cabinet; a large door (which I’m assuming is a lint filter; at least that’s where it was on our 1960 Kenmore electric dryer) and a small black square door on the upper left side of the top of the cabinet. What was that one for?

Rich, I'd say they are 1961 to 1963.  Late 1963/1964 is when they came out with their redesigned, perforated tub and 14/15 pound capacity.  

 

On the dryer, the large door is access to the gas mechanism and where you light the pilot.  The small door is most likely a sprinkler/dampening clothes for ironing.  This is a TOL washer and thus a DispensoMat washer.  The little door on top of the console is most likely the softener and bleach dispenser.

Hi Eugene, I am not exactly sure what the dispensers dispensed on the washer, but one would have differently dispensed fabric softener.

 

On the dryer the left little Chrome plated door was for water to sprinkle dry clothing for ironing, the larger door on the right was gas burner access, gas shut off valve etc, these were always fun on Norge dryers as you could watch the flame as the dryer was operating.

 

One of the interesting things about this picture of the day ad was all the green in the room, many surveys in the early 60s said that green was a housewifes favorite color, this apparently paved the way for Avocado appliances in 1966 and is part of the reason Avocado was so wildly popular for many years.

What I wouldn't give for a brand nEW Norge set and the water heater...The water heaters made today wont last 1/4 as long!
