I suppose that Tide has always been the most popular of detergents for washing clothes. A long time washer repairman I worked for when I was a teenager said that he could always tell if someone had used Tide all the time in their washing machine by the thick coating of crust it had in the outer tub. I saw this too, as we worked on machines he would repair. I personally have never liked Tide because of this and the fact that it was more expensive than most other detergents. Being a Kelvinator and Frigidiare enthusiast, Tide created way too many suds for either machine anyway. "All" worked better for my machines.

Tide is still probably the most popular detergent out there. Growing up, my mom was a die hard user of Tide and Oxydol. Thought that Tide had a sickening sweet smell if too much was used, though it did clean really well.
I have avoided P&G products of late since Laundress pointed out, and found true, many P&G products dull the stainless steel in the washers. Also avoiding anything with Optical Brighteners, had a horrible rash break out on me. It was nasty. Never had that happen before.

I miss the scent of early-1960's Tide. I always knew when the Kenmore was pumping that first load of wash water into the laundry tub. The scent wafted through the house.

Tide Ultra Stain Release (liquid) is my go-to detergent these days, although my favorite-smelling Tide is liquid ColdWater Clean Fresh Scent.

When did Tide stop printing out directions on how to use for diapers, dishes and even floors?

 

Tide is--well, in the case of that ad--WAS such an amazing detergent!
