Maytag A308

For BOL this really is a great machine. I happen to have this one from 1978 in almond/bisque. I guess it's fabric-matic because it's a single speed model? Normal and permanent press cycles work the same as the A806 for the most part. There is a seperate delicate cycle that offers up to 8 minutes of intermittent wash/soak periods, short spin w/ spray rinse, short deep rinse, and 2 minute final spin. It's actually a nice cycle to use for stain removal on regular items also. Excellent washer! Anyone else have this model?

I love the color of the tub too. It's that sort of charcoal gray color with a clear glaze. NEVER looks dirty like the white tubs do. Honestly for the difference in price between a machine like this and an A806, you'd get a great deal on the this A308. It really does all of the same stuff and has the same capacity. I would have loved to have had this machine as my first new machine.

I've never seen a Maytag original center dial in Almond. I think it looks great. The Almond really plays nicely off of the gold on the control panel.

When did Maytags begin to lose any of their reliability? Someone on here said that the early to mid 70s were the MOST reliable. Does that mean the late 70s were not quite as good?

In the mid to late 90's the "Performa's" (Magic Chef) and in the early 2000's Atlantis and Amanatag models. Pretty junky stuff. Bad spin bearing troubles. Plastic tubs.

Actually I think a recent sales-loss for a Maytag DD Energy Star washer, which I was all-for as compared to a WP Cabrio for a friend of mine, was due to a mother-in-law's experience with a "slant-front" Maytag set that she has now which she hates. Not sure if those are Atlantis models or Neptunes, but I think the washer is a top-loader so they'd be Atlantis machines. Why Maytag had to have those supplemental lines is beyond me...they should have badged the 'lesser' machines as something other than Maytag, or at least clearly marketed them as something different than the real-thing. Most people never separated them in their minds from anything else Maytag.

As to the POD, I'm curious why Maytag would put a coupon out there for one specific model. The reasons behind how things get marketed have always fascinated me. There must have been some reason that Maytag wanted to push the 308 - maybe because they had a ton of gray tubs to use, or few white ones, OR they were trying to woo GE and WP buyers with a lower priced washer? I like that behind-the-scenes stuff.

My grandmother bought her matching set Maytag washer and dryer in 1978 and there still in the same laundry room. They been in my family 3 generations. I just changed the 40 year old belts.
