POD 6/20/16 - The QUIET Tappen dishwasher

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

The Top Rack is attached to the bottom rack, contrary to the model in the ad at the top of the thread. The executives were probably well protected in those days. They probably got a nice retirement package. lol.

the POD model was TOL and the model shown with the Tappan execs was the BOL model like what was in the kitchen in the house we bought.

Yep, I'd say that Tappan is a Whirlpool. I vaguely remember someone seeing a CL ad a few years ago that was a "Tappan" dishwasher and it was a WP. I believe Combo52 can confirm these existed.

Dual Drench half washed half the load in each wash so it could be called a half-assed dishwasher. I think it might have done better with plates if it held them tilted a ways back like old Westinghouse roll outs so that the water could really fall down on them, but then there would be nothing to wash the backs of the plates.

Maybe Tappan should have offered a recap or retread job on the wash impellers to improve water pick up. The tire compound might get stinky during dry and God forbid you should have a tread separation at high speed. It would smash everything in the machine. They should have stuck to cooking appliances like Maytag should have stuck to cleaning appliances and not tried to revive their glory days of Globe-made gas ranges and Amana-made freezers. Admiral was no Amana and Hardwick was no Globe, although Hardwick's stove design was not banned as a safety hazard. Can you imagine a 30 inch Globe with those controls right over the burners? They would have to put the oven controls up there on top, too.

The "cylinder" rotated at its 1725 rpm speed during dry cycle for "forced air" drying lol.

Top and Bottom racks connected..

I can't begin to imagine what a PITA that would be to load. I know the early Hotpoints were set up the same way but they look like they would be a little easier to load than this one. Maybe not. I'm glad I have never had to use one. However, I would still love to have one of the Hotpoints that had the upper and lower racks that moved independently.

Tappan dishwasher history

Early Tappan dishwasher models introduced to builders in mid-1961 had the rolling drum impeller, with the upper racks riding on the lower rack, similar to early Hotpoints. The TOL model had an option for storing a supply of special detergent solution "Clean" and rinse aid "Bright". That was followed by the top 2 models (out of 4) having the separate upper rack, again like Hotpoint. The next "improvement" for them was the Reversa-Jet with the spring-loaded wash arms. This design worked in relation to the stop/start of the pump, like current Electrolux design and lasted for several years. The final incarnation of this design is the one shown on The Price is Right tv show, with a standard wash arm and pop up tower, still a Tappan design. All Tappan-designed dishwashers had plastisol-coated tanks. After that, Tappan sourced their dishwashers from Whirlpool, GE and D&M before finally being swept up into the post-WCI D&M machine design from the late 90's. Now the only Tappan dishwasher is that piece of crap seen in every Lowe's.
