Tappan dishwasher history
Early Tappan dishwasher models introduced to builders in mid-1961 had the rolling drum impeller, with the upper racks riding on the lower rack, similar to early Hotpoints. The TOL model had an option for storing a supply of special detergent solution "Clean" and rinse aid "Bright". That was followed by the top 2 models (out of 4) having the separate upper rack, again like Hotpoint. The next "improvement" for them was the Reversa-Jet with the spring-loaded wash arms. This design worked in relation to the stop/start of the pump, like current Electrolux design and lasted for several years. The final incarnation of this design is the one shown on The Price is Right tv show, with a standard wash arm and pop up tower, still a Tappan design. All Tappan-designed dishwashers had plastisol-coated tanks. After that, Tappan sourced their dishwashers from Whirlpool, GE and D&M before finally being swept up into the post-WCI D&M machine design from the late 90's. Now the only Tappan dishwasher is that piece of crap seen in every Lowe's.
