What triggered the detergent box in the lid to open? Were there wires going through the hinge or some poerful electromagnet on that side of the lid opening? Thanks

Tom, I can't answer your question but I really like the style of these machines. Were these all GE inside? Are there any members who have similar Hotpoints in their collection?

Hoptpoint must have been making washers for JC Penney (Penncrest) at the time. Friends in Seattle had a washer that looked just like that on the inside---unfortunately, no groovy detergent dispenser attached to the lid, though. They replaced it with a DD Kenmore about 13 years ago.

I'm trying to recall...did these Hotpoints have an indexing tub? For some reason, I want to say the JC Penney washer's tub indexed a little. Not practically a full circle, as did my 2006 Frigidaire top-loader; but I'm remembering indexing for some reason.

Anyone have a definitive answer on this one?

Good question, Tom! I can't say for sure but we might be able to take a clue from the odd fill-flume in the inset picture with the caption touting the filter system.
You can see the recirculating filter flume in the foreground of the picture. I've never seen this model nor the fill flume but it looks like it may have been some sort of directional spray to flush out the detergent box on the lid. Ge was using a timer controlled valve to direct the recirculating stream in their Dispensall washers, perhaps they used a similar system for this Hotpoint model with fresh water.
This was all GE built. I found it strange they continued the solid tub design for Hotpoint for so long.

I think you are right Greg that they used a similar system to the timer controlled pneumatic valves that the Dispensall Washers did, you can see in the posed picture a little vacuum hose on the diverter housing. The water that flushed the dispenser would of coerce been recirculated wash water if this is how it worked, but this is also one machine that I never saw in the flesh either.

 

And mechanically it was all GE, no indexing tub etc.
