Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Seven Sheets

Is the capacity of washer, and then as now if you have more than can fit in one load, that's too bad. You'll either have to wash the "odd" sheet in another load, by hand or whatever else gets the job done.

In defence advert did say "seven sheets" could be laundered. Taking them at their word there would be six or more pillow slips that needed washing as well; the extra sheet (assuming four beds) could be done with pillow cases.

Full/Matrimonial sheets along with Queen were common enough in 1950's. Collect vintage linens and have no issues finding lengths of 80"-102".

King sized sheets are another matter; don't think they really came upon the scene in terms of ready made until the 1960's.

Contrary to what television and films of the 1940's and 1950's would have us believe, plenty of married couples slept together in double or even queen sized beds. Matrimonial sheets got their name because the things were designed to fit double beds were presumably more than two persons slept.

My parents probably got a king size bed around 1957 or 1958 as I "inherited" their old double bed that was part of their original bed room furniture.

Both styles tested well for CU. In the 1960 test, the solid tub Philco placed at the top of the second group of machines and would have been included in the first group if not for its poor sand disposal.  In 1962, the perforated tub machine placed with the Maytag A500, the GE 750, the Norge and Hamilton at the top of the ratings.

I always preferred the solid tub model.
However, they were very good at cleaning. I think the water extraction was kind of lame.
I used a lot of these machines including the ones at the coin laundry with the little broomstick instead of the detergent/filter column.

This machine should have a simple mechanism for transmitting motion from the motor to the agitator. Does it reverse direction to spin so that the tub drive engages and the fabric softener dispenser in the agitator loses its load? WP had to pay for some patent rights for their "nutation" of the wash plate in the Calypso which was an expanded version of the Flapulation used in this machine.
