Polyester (1981)

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

My favorite movie of all time!

The whole house is so over the top fabulous, or as Cuddles says “Just like Architectural Digest!” For many years I had the exact same turquoise ‘67 Fridigaire bottom freezer refrigerator, what a great box.

Polyester also debuted a significant technical innovation in movie going: Odorama, with the scratch n’ sniff cards. I still have a perfect and unscratched one stored someplace safe.

The whole cast is splendid, as is usual with a John Waters film. Tab Hunter looks especially fetching as Todd Tomorrow and Jonie Ruth White plays a fabulous LaRue, Francine’s social climbing mother. Mink Stole puts in an appearance as Sandra Sullivan, Elmer Fishpaw’s secretary/mistress, and of course Edith Massey as Cuddles.

Or when LaRue says "Hurry up, Francine, I'm losing valuable shopping time!"

Very memorable to me because it was the first John Waters film that could be shown in normal, mainstream theaters. It was rated R. I had seen both "Pink Flamingos" and "Female Trouble" at midnight screenings at college, using a pull down screen in the chemistry lecture hall.

Ive never seen Polyester. The first time I saw Female Trouble I just about pissed my pants I laughed so hard. There were many good lines in that movie I remember.

"By your appearance Miss Davenport it looks like you've never stopped eating."

"Id like to set fire to this dump."

"I better get my Cha-Cha heels."

"Just cause you got them big udders dont make you something special."

Polyester Vomit Scene

John Waters is famous for vomit scenes, IMO this is one of his best. It doesn’t occur at the AA meeting but in a very fancy dress shop where Cuddles is trying on clothes - she utters “damn that Halston!” when she rips a too-small dress trying to squeeze it over her ample body. Meanwhile poor Francine is very hung over and feeling ill in the waiting area while a snobby clerk watches . . .

I stand corrected!

I own a copy of the movie, I should know better! Thanks, and the entire dress shop scene was a scream!

John Waters

Is a neighbor of my friend Greg in Baltimore and I met him at some of Greg's parties, he would usually show up in a black high collared jacket cape type of outer shirt with a group of guys around him. I don't think that I ever got close enough to speak to him more than once, but he did make quite a presence, LOL. His house was really cool, at least from the outside as I never got inside.
