Gallbladder and Liver.

A friend was just told of this condition. What does it mean? Will the polyps become cancerous? Do they need to be surgically removed, ASAP?

Thanks in advance for the insights.

From my limited knowledge......

Polyps are usually not cancerous, but on the gall bladder and liver, that could be serious. I would suggest having a biopsy done.

Removing the gall bladder is not the serious surgery it once was. I had mine removed 3 years ago, and it was done with the laproscope and I went home the same day. I was off work for two weeks. I was given pain meds, I only needed them the day of the surgery, after that I just had some abdominal soreness that felt like I had done too many sit ups.

The liver, that is another matter. I do not know much about that other than the liver can regenerate, so if a part of it needs to come out, it can grow back.

Since I have a family history of cancer, I always say, if in doubt, cut it out.

Does your friend drink? That can have a bearing. My gall bladder issues were caused by alcoholism (4 years sober the 17 of this month).

I've never heard of polyps in the liver/gallbladder; only in the colon. Stones are a common problem in the liver/gallbladder, especially if the individual is on the "Standard American Diet" of eating greasy garbage and consuming lots of alcohol. Gallbladder removal surgery due to stones is the biggest scam in the health care industry. All stones can be flushed using "alternative" methods. And yes, they work :)

From a quick googling, it would appear that polyps can indeed appear on the gall bladder, but not on the liver per se. The polyps only grow on epithelial tissue, and the liver itself is not epithelial (epithelial tissue: skin is epithelial). So the liver polyp might be on a duct or something inside or beside the liver.

Me, I was told that when I had the full thorax CT scan in the trauma center after my hit and run accident three years ago, that I had no problems with my internal organs save for a cyst on one of my kidneys. But the doc said that they are common and it was nothing to be concerned about. I've read they are nearly always benign and fluid-filled. They can be problems if they grow big enough to impinge on other organs, I've read, but he said mine was small. My cyst, that is ;-)
