pop pop goes the neptune

here is a question.. found a used neptune fixed the wax motor thing and all of that put a new belt on it and all seems good till you load it up and it runs.. when the machine changes direction during the wash it pops.. not real loud but to me it feels like it comes from the real tub brg.. is that the cause and if so do you think it will last the way it is or what? have never done much work on a neptune but i could do a brg if i got a wild hair ha ha ....

Is the drum pulley as tight as it can be?

I'd check the trunnion (I believe the official name is the spinner support assy), part#22004081. These have been known to snap an ear or bolt off. The trunnion is that triangle piece on the back of the tub that has the shaft & bearing on it.

Isn't that also known as the Spider support assembly for whatever reason?

I've seen postings some time ago, telling how they are unfortunately made with Pot-Aluminum, instead of being made out of Stainless Steel or other stronger Metal, "Go-Figure} just so they can soak you with a Repair that shouldn't really ever be necessary.

ha ha go fiugre.. i ran it last night when it runs dry the noise seems to come from the drum brg area. but with water and a load it sounds like the motor? so im not sure.. but i did see on the back side where the drum pulley is attached there is a tiny hole on the top of the outer drum. its in the center and just above where the pully attaches,, there are some tiny metal shavings there is that a tub brg that is comming apart?

well i figure il give the repair a shot. the machine only cost me 35 bucks then 36 to fix the wax motor and circut board so i spend another 100 what the hell.. besides i have never had one of these apart so should be fun

When you put the new belt on, did you also change the motor isolators?

yep chanced the motor bushing things but it didnt change the noise . i cant imagine its a motor prob.. the shaft is good and solid and no funny smell or heat from the motor. it has to be a tub brg prob.. right ?? ha ha

If it is a bearing problem, reach in & spin the tub by hand. You'll hear the bearings growl (& probably be able to feel it as well). Now, move the tub around. If it really bangs & knocks, or feels really loose, it probably is the trunnion/spinner support assy. I'm leaning towards this. We've changed dozens. I probably have 20 upstairs in the warehouse with this same problem.

I talked w/ my brother today (he does most of our neptune repairs), and he figures either 1] trunnion, or 2] the bearing. He's noticed quite a few w/ a bearing type slap. You could be on the right track.

well got the spinner support changed out and an new lip seal and all is good to go.. actually the job was sort of fun and only took 2 hours but the machine is running just fine and no more noise.. thanks so much for the advice !!!!!

Spin Spider !

The first Neptune I picked up had this same problem - the lip seal I had was bad and ended up needing a new outer tub - but it worked for a long time afterward and I sold it for a healthy profit. It is a rather interesting machine to work on, I just wish getting into the cabinet were a little easier...sharp edges and nicked hands for everyone!

Nice edges, eh? You know what Maytag's solution to that was? How about trying to make all the tech's wear kevlar gloves!! Yippee. They also recommended kevlar arm sleeves. At service schools, they told us over &over again, "we're not responsible if you bleed on someone's appliance." Nice, real nice.

YEP I THINK YOU WERE RIGHT ON AND THANKS FOR THE ADVICE... AM GONNA RUN A HEAVY LOAD THIS WEEKEND AND MAKE SURE ITS OK THEN I THINK I MIGHT PUT THIS ONE IN THE HOUSE AND SELL THE NEW ONE THE OLDER ONE HAS A LIGHT IN THE TUB AND IS SO MUCH MORE QUIET..
