Powdered Tide or Liquid Tide/Cheer

Well I've just recently started using liquids again after years of powder and so far, so good. The detergent I'm using right now (Vaska) is very thin in comparison to some of the goopy /syrupy ones I've seen elsewhere so I suspect it isn't artificially thickened which should probably help prevent buildup. That plus the usual warm or hot washes.

I am shocked. I was always told that for cold washing use liquid as the powder didn't disolve well in cold. In fact my new Maytag/Whirlpool washer manual says exactally that. "For temperatures less than 60 degrees use a liquid detergent. . . "

In my top load I always did as suggested above. I disloved my Powdered Tide in a pitcher of hot water and poured it into the machine.

I rarely, but do use softner on occasion. I don't want to hijack as I know this is a Tide/Cheer thread, but does anyone have an opinion on Woolite? I have heard some say that it is too alkali, but the for darks seems to do a good job.

I will say this about recent liquids....one of the machines that I have returned to service in the 18 months or so has seen a decent amount of liquid detergent since then. When the South was shifted by P&G to 2x liquids (we were the last region of the country), I started searching out 1x leftovers, and found a 5 or 6 year-old bottle of Tide with Bleach at a CVS on clearance. That stuff added to the scrud on the auger, or so it seams, and put a funny deposit on the gold straight-vane of another machine (again, so it seemed) but other liquids have not, not before or after that. In the straight-vane machine in fact, I used an entire 100oz bottle of Tide w/Febreze with no issues whatsoever.

So, perhaps the scrud build-up problem has been quietly handled by the detergent companies?

I've been happy with Tide powdered detergent when I used it in the past, I don't use Tide anymore since I've been trying to "Green" my footprint here.

I refuse to use Liquid stuff, my aunt uses it since it came out in the 80's and I had to do a repair on their washer, OMG, talk about gunk build up! ughh..

I use Tide, Cheer and Sears powdered detergents and have never had a problem with any of it. No scum, crud, junk of any kind in the machines. I do have to use less though in my Easy spindryer machine because the spiralator action tends to create lots of suds. Happy washing. Gary

My washer does have an agitator. It has 3.5 cu. ft and the stainless tub.

During my lunch hour today I popped into Target and as usual I passed by the detergent section... to my surprise there was a P&G rep there doing some sort of inventory (maybe ordering). I had to bite my tongue in order not to tell him what I thought of his 15 versions of Tide & Downy. I purposely spent time looking at the powdered detergents instead of the ever-growing lineup of liquids.

Just my own little silent protest (which I am sure fell upon blind eyes).

Tide Powder

Ive used tide since 1972,when I got my first washer an old 55frogeye Kenmore.I use warm water for reg clothes no fabric softners and a little oxyclean.Towels and sheets get washed in hot water rinsed in warm.I always leave the lid open so the machine air-dries.I use a 55 Kenmore cyclafabric for my everyday machine and have had no problems with odors,actually out of any of them.If you think about it most people when they finish washing they close the lid and when they use cold water it really never dries out.Fabric softeners coat fabrics and after extended use Im sure the tubs get coated.Maybe it would be a good idea to run a load of hot water and a cup of bleach through the machine once a month to clean the outer tub and backside of the inner tub. Here in south Texas "cold" water is often body temp. I use cold for all my dark clothes and they are always fresh smelling, even with NO softener and unscented detergent. Some of my black tshirts are over five years old, and still wearable.

Beware washing dark clothes in powder Tide, unless you replace your clothes often.

I find that i'm able to tolerate the wash cycles okay, but the spin is really traumatic.
