Pre-Rinsing Dishes

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

I never pre rinse - just scrape

My state banned DW detergents with phosphates effective June 2010, so I have been stocking up for a few months. I recently tried Cascade powder and Finish tabs and powder all non phosphate. I am surprised that these products clean very well in regular and economcy cycles. They meet a challenge when you try to wash burned on cheese..something that Finish(Electrasol tabs) with phosphate was able to do completely, while Cascade could not.

Many of the cycles on my DW have rather long wash periods so this might part of the reason for good results - not sure. Yesterday I used the economcy cycle with Finish non phosphate powder which has a lower temperature but even it washed for 49 minutes. The results were spotless. I think performance with non phosphate detergents is going to vary with conditions.

Just put some boric acid powder under, around the sides of and on the top of your dishwasher. Within a week, your roach problem will be gone! You can use one of those small "puffer" tools to spray it in there.

I stocked up on Cascade powder with Dawn last week at Walgreen's. I bought 5 boxes and am hoping by keeping it in a cool, dark, low humidity basement cabinet that it won't solidify on me. My advice is to get to your nearest Walgreen's and check it out. Apparently nobody goes to Walgreen's to buy dishwasher detergent.

My thing with peanut butter on knives is that it leaves a film, not a stain. Even the Thundering Thermador leaves peanut butter film.

I scrape off as much as I can before loading the TT since it has no filter. I use rinse/hold often because it can take us a while to accumulate a full load. Ever since acquiring the TT I use real plates for every little thing to help fill it faster. No more paper. Usually there's not much of a smell in the tub while its waiting for a full load.

I got two 48 count tab boxes of Cascade Complete at the grocery store last weekend I don't use tabs cuz they're so expensive per use, but I wanted to get something. These should last me for quite a while. Around $12 a container.

I don't pre-rinse our dishes, only thing I rise is tomatoes based sauce, and eggs. Otherwise my tub turns pink of I don't rise the tomatoes sauce out!

I use the Finish powered detergent, and everything comes out clean, and I don't put any in the first cup, just the main wash on my Maytag.

I think I'm going to stop filling the first cup on my "Regular Wash" cycle too. There is no rinse in between the "Pre" and "Main" washes and that has always bugged me about the TT. Only on "Heavy Steam" will the machine provide a rinse between those two washes, and I it's rare to need such a heavy duty cycle.

I sure wish I knew what was going through the design team's heads re: some of the quirky aspects of Thermador/WKU machines.

Tom:

"washed for 49 minutes
The "wash" portion of the cycle, after the detergent cup opens and before the water is drained from that fill was 49 minutes?"

Well not exactly. I have timed this cycle before and sometimes the wash portion is 54 minutes and some times it doesn't last 49 minutes.

I timed it from the time the machine started until the wash water began to drain, so when first started the pump drains any water spilled into the DW, this is about 1 minute.

Then the water starts to enter the DW. It enters for about 20 seconds, then the DW begins to spray it around then pause the spray while more water enters, then the water stops coming in and the spray resumes. This "water entering period" lasts about 31 seconds but sometimes it can be a few seconds longer or shorter(I didn't make this thing, I just use it). For most of cycles the detergent cup opens about 3 minutes after the spray resumes, but for the Ecomomy cycle the cup opens almost immediately.

So perhaps it lasted 47 minutes?

I ran a weekend load(dishes sitting from Friday, Saturday, and Sunday) this morning using Finish non phosphate powder. Everything was clean and spottless(although I am using Miele rinse aid). I am really starting to like this formulation - even better than the old powder with chorline bleach and it was cheaper than Cascade. I paid $6.34 for Cascade and $2.99 for same size Finish.

The truth has set me free!

Thanks Y'all,

I've been complaining about my dishwasher and rinsing to near cleanness for years...blaming the DW when apparently I was the problem--the Bobette of Bob loads.

So, I've tried two no prewash loads including a baked on lasagna pan, a corningware casserole with dried grits--you northern folks may not realize it, but one could mortar a house with dried grits, and an omlette pan (stainless, not nonstick) with a thin coating of cooked on eggs. All clean in that load except one glass and two plates. Lots of yibbles though. Second load was even cleaner, but less challenging.

Life is, you know, like 1,000% better, but I'm a high maintenance girl. I would like some yibble reduction and better performance if possible. We're using Jet Dry rinse aid and store brand detergent. Ideas?

Wow! Freedom from prewashing is soooo cool!

Best,
Sarah

Pre-Rinsing

The only time I will pre-rinse is when we have had Italian food. No red sauce in my dishwasher.

pre-rines what ?

My diggety dog buddy aka rover always does a great job cleaning my plates just set'em down hell clean'en spotless but they do go in the dw. thanks john.

But Mommy, I Thought The Dishwasher Washed The Dishes

As the young girl in the old television commerical asks mother as the woman scrapes and washes/rinses dishes, all before loading them into the dishwasher.

I'll say it again; aside from perhaps a few "smelly" things I'm not rinsing or washing anything before it goes into the dishwasher. I mean what is the point?

The Rest of the Story

Isn't there someone in Alabama who can help Sarah get her Kitchenaid dishwasher that's sitting in the basement swappped out with her builder grades GE? Freedom from yibbles, streak free washing and spotless drying is just plumbers tape away.

I knew it!

Here I am, ready with model number scrawled on my green scrap of paper, logging in to answer appnut's question about what dishwasher am I using, when I saw yours was the last post.

I thought, "Dear Lord, Kelly's already told them for me!"

To be most specific, it's a GE GSD500X-66AW. If it's a model that can only be purchased by a contractor, then it probably ended up in my 1951 house because the shady son of the people we purchased it from who calls himself a contractor bought it for them We're still getting summons, calls from creditors and sheriff's deputies showing up on our doorstep looking for that kid!

So, one of the biggest obstacles is getting my beautiful harvest gold KA up the stairs, installed and working before Bruce comes home from work.

The stairs are the biggest obstacle. Of late, the stairs have declared war on me. So far it's stairs 2, Sarah 0. Anyone know how a girl can fall down four steps, scrape both elbows, one knee, earn a goose egg the size of a real goose's egg on the other shin, scrape the surface off of her right foot and bruise the left foot beyond walking?

My psychiatrist recommends that I stop carrying stuff up and down stairs. I didn't bother to tell him that carrying stuff is inevtable because I have to go up a flight of stairs just to get in my house. But probably single-handing a dishwasher up the stairs is a bit extreme. I rather expect my days of unloading side by side refrigerators and stacked washer/dryers from Budget rent-a-trucks may be over too. Probably just as well. I nearly crushed myself under the washer/dryer.

I know, I need to just pay someone to help and get it over with.

Kelly, oh, Kelly when are you coming to visit?

Sarah
