(all readily available, I might add, in public records, readily accessible to the non tinfoil hat set.)

Now that I've done that. Let me say this: If you are not comfortable here, you always have the option of not stopping by. It sure wouldn't break my heart.

goprog, im sure ur a doll and im sorry this sounds so accusatory, but stop causing trouble where there is none.

chill out.

whenever i feel this site is unsafe to visit or that the Webmaster is not doing his job well i will stop visitng.

Personally, I don't find that IPs reveal all that much info. Unless one has bought a netblock or had one assigned by an ISP via dedicated service, such that it's registered with ARIN or other controlling organization, ownership of the IP is listed to the ISP and targeted to the source of their pipe or their home office, and the info returned on a DNS look-up is determined by what the ISP enters into their DNS records. Some might, but most ISPs, I don't think, would take the time and effort to target DNS host records to a specific customer by name or physical address. Typically DNS records are set up before IPs are even assigned to customers.

There are numerous tools for doing look-ups. Several I tried, my IPs (depending on if I'm at work or home, different ISPs) don't even report the correct city, much less a specific physical address. If anybody wants to find me, there're plenty ways to do that other than by IP.

goprog, can you tell me exactly where I am right now from my IP?

Not to mention

that many ISPs (including mine, Earthlink, who despite all the creepy and suspicious connections to the Church of You know What, is a great ISP --- I've been with them on and off ever since it started running on a single server sitting on the floor in founder Sky Dayton's dining room in 1994 ... there was a time when you would call Earthlink tech support and actually get Sky on the phone) -- but I digress...

Anyway, what I was saying was, many ISPs have "dynamic" I.P. addresses, meaning - basically - every time you connect to their service you get a different, and totally random I.P. address. In such cases, what really is an I.P. number going to reveal about a user, unless some law enforcement agency (or the Men In Black) get a search warrant to seize the ISP's login records??

I agree this is "much ado about nothing." Better you should worry about things like the upcoming "smart ID card" where your entire life will be contained on a piece of plastic.

This is getting rediculous and you are just plain INCORRECT

I've already written the code
Excuse me but I spent MONTHS writing the code to get the Discuss-o-Mat section of aw.org operating. Not days, not weeks, but months. You cannot have written any code that would work when you don't even know what language the website is written in or what the server can compile. Sure you can write some arbitrary code that records ip address in a separate place, but then you have to integrate it properly in the main program, and it's not that easy. Also how many times do I have to tell you that I want the IP's visible so anyone who wishes to help me take care of the site can do so.

But more importantly, you are being completely PARANOID and in doing so you are passing misinformation. The idea of the government showing up on my doorstep and seizing the computer to the Super Unimatic is out of a comdey routine. All this information is stored on a server in California, not here on my home computer. When you first joined and I saw we were from the same state so I asked where you are from and you responded "Twin Cites". So I tried again and asked you where in the metro are you from and you responded "South West Suburbs". By not telling me what suburb you lived in I knew then and there you were nervous about something. Remember not only do so many of use share each others address and phone numbers here with each other, we've been to each others houses.

So now like Glenn and others above I'm going to put a stop to your passing misinformation right now. Let me make this quite clear to everyone:

WITHOUT A COURT ORDER THERE IS NO WAY TO FIND OUT THE ACTUAL ORIGINATING NAME OF THE PERSON AND STREET ADDRESS OF AN IP. I USE IP ADDRESSES OR THE FIRST FEW DIGITS OF AN IP ADDRESS ON VERY RARE OCCASSIONS TO BLOCK USERS WHO FOR WHAT EVER REASON ARE MISBEAHVING, THAT IS IT.

And now that Robert has said it, why don't we all drop it because it's not going to change. If you don't feel "safe" here, then don't come here. You really are being ridiculously paranoid, as if you have something to hide or be afraid of (not that you do, but....).

Thank you Jeezus

Wow, what i'm so surprised about is that someone thought he had a bone to pick and everyone jumped on the band wagon. why? As i see it there is no need for for anyone to be "paranoid" when you sign up to be part of an online community. If it bothers you that much then don't do it. plain and simple.......If there is a problem then report it and let the webmaster deal with whomever is causing problems. Just my two cents worth......Mark
