Remember, Virtually Spotless? Remember, how that tagline all went away, and millions of consumers ran from the sinking ship, after Cascade was reformulated to be phosphate free?

Well. The folks, at P&G have finally discovered the way to put that all behind them. And, it starts with reformulating from the bottom.

Yup. Remember old-school Cascade Powder & Gel. Remember how it was top selling, and then overnight, became practically useless for hard water households? Those formulations, rather liked by some or not, are now all gone. Seriously. There Gone.

And a new product line has emerged, replacing the little space, at the bottom. "Cascade with the Power of Clorox". A new product, now touted with the name of a competitor to grab the consumers eye. But, what's interesting about this "new" product... is the fact, that it's listed on the website as a "Complete Powder", and the MSDS Sheets seem to match.

You know what that means? They took a product, that was a horrible performer, and then just stuffed the box, with a very well performing product. Simply Repackaging it under a different name, literally.

And as for the old Cascade Powder. It's in a "market phaseout" status as I've been informed. Meaning, it's being planned to be slowly discontinued. And, in some markets, it's completely gone, and you only have the choice of powder with "Clorox".

This also seems to come at a time, that P&G is spending millions, on a national advertising campaign, convincing everyone just how horrible Finish is, compared to TOL Cascade. Coincidence? Maybe, Maybe Not.

Idk. I just thought that was interesting. Both, Cascade Gel & Cascade Powder, are now listed as a part of the Complete line, leaving me to believe the original line, will soon be gone with the wind, eventually.

I'm doing my best to swear off P&G little by little. It's a difficult process considering that Gain is my all time favorite smell in the world. Seeing (or smelling rather) the fate of Tide Original's scent, I'd imagine the clock is ticking on the true scent of Gain, which is still the same for the most part despite a slight change over the years.

I've been using Finish Powerball Tabs for a long time now, with great results. If Cascade Complete or Platinum pacs are on sale, I'll pick them up, but I'm always reminded why I don't use it because of the chaulky feeling it leaves on anything plastic. The smells are magnificent, but I want my detergents to do their job first and foremost, and smell pleasant second.

I'm working through a box of Tide Original. Sadly it's the box that rudely woke me to the change they made to the scent. It's nauseating. Recently I've tried All Small & Mighty, and blue Snuggle fabric softener for when I decide to throw in a dash, and I've actually been pleased. The All cleans well, and it smells the same as I remember as a kid. The Snuggle isn't concentrated, but I still only use less than half a capful, and unlike Downy, it doesn't leave my dispenser caked in goop, and it leaves a light scent and the clothes still feel clean, not oily.

Just about the only thing I still trust is Dawn Original dish soap, but who knows, with P&G's sudden tyranny of needless change, I'm sure that'll change as well.

I'm perfectly happy with the Cascade Complete I've been using for over a year.  I buy a BIG box on sale for under $5 and it lasts me for months, and cleans well too.  For some reason I feel there is something better about the dishes after using a Cascade pack but can't justify the added cost when it's only a feeling...

Nellie's

I've tried a few of the Nellie's products and don't really care for them. The dishwasher products are basically just salt with some citric acid and a surfactant. There were no enzymes so my dishes were still a bit dirty at the end of the cycle. Same goes for the laundry products.

I'm still working on my stash of vintage Cascade Action Pacs, but it is starting to look bare in the cupboard. I purchased a box of new Cascade powder with Clorox to use in the pre-wash cup. It doesn't seem to have any chlorine bleach aroma. I haven't tried using it alone yet, for both pre- and main-wash.

Costco is now carrying the Cascade Complete Action Pacs that received good reviews in Consumer Reports, so I purchased a big tub of those. I ran a couple of test washes with them, and they cleaned adequately without leaving a white film.

It appears they may be finally getting their non-phosphated formula to perform like the old phosphated version did. Time will tell.

Syllahosiris: I like Nellie's dishwasher powder. It does a great job in softened water. Can't vouch for it in medium-hard or hard water. Full disclosure: I switched back to Cascade Platinum Pacs because they keep the stainless steel interior of the dishwasher gleaming.

I also like Nellie's Laundry Nuggets for loads of bath linens, as it leaves absolutely no scent and rinses out completely, even in very soft water. A good (if spendy) choice if you are detergent-sensitive or want to use a more "natural" product. Pair it with Nellie's oxygen brightener for stained loads. Can't vouch for its performance in medium-hard or hard water.

The Nellies stuff I can find at of all places...Marshalls and TJ Maxx for cheap. I bought a bag of the washing soda...not realizing that it was a detergent...I was thinking it was like the washing soda from Arm and Hammer. I have not tried it yet, but its in my stash...I have to agree about Tide Original scent powder, they did change the scent and to me its kinda missing...I mentioned it on Tide's FB page and they wanted to know more....imagine that! Like they had no clue that the scent had changed. I found older boxes of regular Tide Original scent at of all places Rite Aid and compared it to the new box I bought at Walmart, and sure enough they do not smell the same. I wish like hell that P&G would leave scents alone on its products. I had to stay away from Downy April Fresh when they changed the scent to the reeky one. They since changed it back somewhat but it doesnt smell the same as before the reeky scent was rolled out, and its nothing like I remember as a kid.
Gain scent I used to like until they amp'd up the aroma. And dont get me started about the stench of the Tide Simply Clean and Fresh...talk about major gag...and it doesnt clean like regular Tide and it leaves a lovely "bathtub ring" in my SQ washer that I have to take a scrubbing pad to. I dont use it by my tenant does.

Scents are changed to appeal to the buying public and people from south of the border like heavy floral and fruity fragrances. I just don't want Tupperware smelling like roses when I take it out of the machine because foods stored in it will pick up the scent.

I really don't want anything I own to smell like tide or downy.  Why do scents have to last in our clothes for 14 days or more?  Scent's don't even have to be in our clothes.  Just clean the clothes and be done.

So I put on a shirt rinsed  8 days ago with Downy XX fabric softener.  I get dressed put on my regular nice mens cologne go to work and now these scents get mixed together and I smell like vomit.

FAIL.
