Found a vintage Pyrex stove top percolator on Ebay for an elderly friend. She's so excited because it is the one she and her family used way back when in Chicago. Anyway, she has a smooth top electric range at her condo and wants to know if she needs to use a little wire trivet on the stove like she did many years ago. I told her I didn't know, but would ask around and find out. So does anyone know?

No she will not need to use the wire trivet on her smooth to

The smoothtop itself acts as a barrier between the bottom of the pot and the actual coil burner. I speak from experience because when I lived in a place with a smooth top cooktop I used my pyrex Flameware all the time without ever having a problem...PAT COFFEY

I have a collection of these and I love them. My maternal Grandmother was one of those women who could make a fantastic pot of coffee out of these. Be careful, you don't have to worry about the stove, but the little glass percolator neck and the glass part of the basket were always the things my Mother would break as she insisted on hand washing them (because, of course, they were too fragile for the dishwasher). Bring it to a boil, turn it down to a simmer and let perk for at least 5 minutes. We used these directly on electric coils, gas flames, everything was OK.

Pyrex Coffee Pot

I bought my Mama one of those Pyrex pots for Christmas many many decades ago at Rich's on a church youth trip to Cumberland Mall in Atlanta. She loved it (and so did I). Unfortunately I dropped it and broke it many years ago. :o(

Tea Pots

As Retromania knows I collect Corning Wear tea pots. Mama used the Corning Wear tea and coffee pots. Being the clumsy oaf I was I broke everyone she had. The tea post are now popping up at thrift and antique stores.

Heritage Pieces

When my parents moved away, my OL gave me her Pyrex 8-cup percolater.  Complete with all parts.  She had it for 40+ years.  I only had it for a month when I managed to smash the lid!  I hit every junk shop in North Jersey until I found a replacement to save face!  I use it carefully nowadays, and it does make one GREAT cup of coffee!  I let the water come to a boil first, then, turn down to low and put in the "works" and time it 8 minutes.  Never fails.  If anyone watched the promo film in the other forum on "dream kitchens", you'll notice Marsha Hunt using the same one.
