Question for the Maytag experts

The A712 does a strange thing. When the motor first kicks on, it makes an odd sound that I have never heard from any other Tag. After a second, the motor runs and sounds normal. I assume it has something to do with the start winding or motor switch. Yesterday I used slow speed for the first time, and it made the funny noise, then started on NORMAL speed for about three seconds! It then changed over to slow speed. I know it has nothing to do with the timer or speed selector switch. Could it be a short in the start windings or start switch?

Hey Bobby,

Try spraying the motor switch with contact cleaner. I'm sure you've checked the belts and motor carriage. Also make sure the speed selector buttons are fully depressed.Depending on where it is plugged in, maybe a low voltage scenario?

Hi John!
I knew you would be one of the ones to the rescue. It is definitely not a low voltage issue, not belts or motor carriage either. Would it be worth changing the switch to see if that solves the problem?

Does this strange sound happen on any cycle; wash and spin;high and low speed? It would be worth changing the motor switch...good place to start anyway. Do you have a good switch from another motor? If not, give me the part # and I'll check it out.

Another concern...

Can you describe the noise? That might help. One way to check the motor is to remove the wiring from the start switch and run a jumper cord to it and plug it in, eliminating the washer electronics. The test cord is easy enough to make and I'll post a chart for you. If the colors on the start switch don't match the diagram, refer to your schematic that is either in the console or stuck to the machine somewhere...
This is, of course, if you're comfortable doing this. You can test with or without the belts on...

Thanks RCD. I think the motor is fine. I am suspect of the switch however. I think the easiest thing to do at this point is replace the switch and see if that does the trick.

OK, Can someone translate the old part numbers into the new? The motor is 2-1666-13. The number on the switch is 8824. It seems the part numbers have changed, and some of the switches are NLA. Any suggestions? John???

Latest part # for motor switch is 206505....says NLA...I might be able to find one, if you want...let me know.

Hi John:
I would love it if you could locate one. I notice quite a bit of oil on top of the motor and switch. It is not tranny oil, and have no idea why it would be there. The motor shroud is clean. Could this oil have screwed up the switch?
