I cam down stairs the other morning, and my beloved Stir Crazy was on the floor with several broken pieces. I thought maybe it would still be usable, but when I plugged her she made terrible noises, and the bowl was almost cracked in two. I bought her off of ebay about 4 years ago for $19.99 NIB. For now I will be using my stove top hand crank popper.

I don't like hot air poppers, and as much popcorn as I eat, buying boxes of microwave popcorn would cost me a small fortune, LOL

I am very sorry

I love my Stir Crazy as well, and mine has a crack in its base, too. However, mine still works well..... They are allegedly still made, but in China :(

I found mine at a garage (yard, tag, jumble) sale. You might be as lucky.

I love the Stir Crazy!  The new ones made in China are junk - they get too hot, too fast and scorch the hull of the corn kernel before it heats the center enough to make it pop.  I bought an original Stir Crazy last year on ebay - slightly used and it's been great.  I found a NIB original at Goodwill shortly after the ebay one came so I'm set for a while.  There are times I like the Whirley-Pop hand-crank pan and in lazy times, the Stir Crazy.  I also love popcorn and make it two or three times a week at least.  Of all the methods of popping corn, the Whirley-Pop and the Stir Crazy are the best.  Done correctly, the stovetop method is really the very best, but the Stir Crazy really comes as close as any electric popper I've ever used.

Aww!

I have the whirly Pop exactly like what Greg posted above. Its a wonderful device. We use it all the time. I am not much of a popcorn person, but it tastes delicious when homemade.

I am pretty sure we had a stir crazy a long time ago. Don't know what happened to it. We still have the old vertical air popper. That works ok. Its easy. But not as good as the Whirly-Pop I think.

To make the bestest popcorn you really have to try using coconut oil and order some Flavacol popcorn salt.. just like at the movies. Naturally it's all bad for you, that's why it tastest soooo good.

I think I have seen the modern Chinese Stir Crazies at Target. I seldom see them used any more--either they aren't getting donated to thrift shops, or else they sell really fast.

The old design (I've never tried the Chinese--and have no real interest in doing so) was quite good. I think I heard once that it was, at one time, the reference standard the popcorn industry used.

re: the Ebay ad linked in the third posting in this thread

I'm waiting to see a "comes from our pet free, smoke free, child free, spouse free, paint free home".

Some of these people worry too much.

buying boxes of microwave popcorn would cost me a small fort

Dollar Tree, $1 for a box of 4 full-sized micro bags. Light butter is good as is the kettle corn variety.

I've been doing it a little healthier. 3T kernels in a brown paper lunch bag, fold over the top a couple of times, lay it on its side and micro for about 2 minutes. Then I can melt a little real butter and mix it. A LOT healthier than the pre-packed micro stuff!

Hot Air Popper

I have a hot-air popper that I got in the 80s sometime. I used it seldom, but recently thought about firing it up again. Back then, stores sold popping corn especially designated for hot-air popping. Now I don't see that kind. Was that really something different, or can "normal" popping corn be used?

I don't care for the hot air popcorn either,The popper I have now is a microwave popper made by Rubbermaid,Ive used it the most out of all the poppers i've owned, I put olive oil and seasonings in, makes good popcorn.

Menards

AutoWasherFreak,

I know for a fact that Menards stocks them. Just saw one there yesturday when i was shopping for floor tile. Just thought I would let you know.

One quart is approximately a litre.

Ordinary popcorn (inexpensive and "abundant" quantities)
heat-safe large bowl
heat-safe plate

Pop in microwave oven and you don't need any specialized equipment to make popcorn.
One less thing to clutter the kitchen and house.

(Without butter and excessive salt, popcorn is great fiber and quite healthy!)

I usually buy the biggest bag I can find at Hy-Vee, I like yellow popcorn the best. The other day I was at Wal-Mart so I bought two of the smaller bags of Jolly Time white popcorn. I brought up and washed my stove top hand crank popper, and had a big bowl of popcorn, good stuff!

The Family Dollar store has the $1.00 boxes of four bags, but I usually eat two bags at a time. They also have the boxes of 10 mini bags for $1.75.

Another big fan of the Whirley-Pop here. I use 3 Tbs of canola oil, 3/4 cup of Amish country purple popping corn, stir in a bit of Flavacol and in about 3 minutes, I have 6 quarts of popcorn that's as good as you'll get at the movie theater.
