So I ran the pots and pans cycle with the sani rinse selected and the dishwasher drained properly except for the final drain. I tried doing a cancel after the cycle ran out and couldn't get it to drain, then I waited 15 mins tried again and that time it drained. The new timer is on its way and I think I've got it figured out.

Here is my speculation:
I think pots and pans never engages the "rapid advance" part of the timer therefore it behaves much better on the pots and pans cycle with sani-rinse. I notice the machine either heats the water or does a purge during fill, and it doesn't do the purge on the normal cycle which it rapid-advances past which causes the drain issue.

I suspect not having sani-rinse set on pots and pans would produce similar bad draining troubles even on the pots and pans cycle, and I don't think energy-saver dry has anything do to with rapid advance, just turns off the heat. Does it use the same element to heat the water as it does to dry the dishes? If de-selecting energy-saver dry does something with rapid advance that might explain the no drain at the end of the cycle.

I love this machine and can't wait to get it working perfectly again! Tomorrow I'll try a pots and pans cycle with sani rinse on and heat on, maybe it will complete the whole cycle?

As far as the draining goes,it may just be the timer so see what happens when you change it out. It could be the motor relay or the windings on the motor since the final drain is a bit longer IIRC than all the others and may be enough time for a motor malfunction to happen where the motor is actually overheating and shutting off on thermal overload.

The dryer uses a separate element outside the tank in the blower housing to heat the air and selecting no heat dry only shuts off that element and has nothing to do with the sump heater.
On my Monterey, it would cycle perfectly but would not always advance to start properly and then the next cycle would miss opening the first detergent cup which was so irksome. This would happen more on a rinse and hold where the RA would take over and take the timer thru its paces. If a regular cycle was selected, the timer would reset properly nearly 100% of the time and the detergent dispenser would work correctly.
Let us know if the new timer solves the issue for you. Maybe I will get one and give my Monterey a transplant!

lsteve you may right since I have to wait 15 mins before attempting final drain. not sure that explains the partial drain on every drain on the normal cycle. maybe I'll try light tomorrow and see what happens.

do you know if it only does the water purge on pots and pans?
