THANKS for thinking of me on these. This pair is very similar to the BD 1986 machines that I bought, except my washer is a 29" machine.
The washer being advertised is indeed a Direct Drive. There are several clues of this. The rear without the little service panel access is the first clue. The clear plastic "saucer" on the timer dial pointer is another. The 24" DD's lid is much deeper than the BD's, as it takes up most all of the top except the edge indent. Finally, the black section in the off portion in between Pre-Wash and Cotton-Sturdy was not ever present in a BD.
This is a 70-series Heavy Duty Plus machine, meaning it has a Dual-Action agitator and self-cleaning filter. Similar models with the straight vane agitator, and either a manual filter or no filter at all were 60-series machines. The washer is paired with a large capacity dryer, an 80-series with solid state sensor in fact. Seems like an unlikely combination to me, as the standard flat-back dryers were usually paired with the 2.4/2.5 cu ft. DDs.
When I bought my 86s, I avoided the DD offerings like the plague, but we seem to find a number of these DD mid-80s washers, so Sears must have sold a good number of them!
