These globe top types date back to more like 1946.

 

They were cheap "builder's" or "landlord" grade units.  They didn't even include a dial for the cold control.  Any temperature adjustment required going around the back and using a screwdriver.

 

It makes sense that the finish would be kind of rough.  It wasn't up to the same standards as a real monitor top.

I think the Globe top was introduced around 1934. The design was promoted as being easier to keep clean as it was completely enclosed without the exposed coils.

Exposed coils.

Ball tops had them moved to the square section above the door. The sulpher dioxide flows through those ridges

It may be cheap but it would be a conversation piece

Could we have a clear glass globe made and blue lights to bring drama or just add a narrow slit that lights up? I am crazy.
