Repair or replace the FriGEMore?

After 6 years of flawless service, our GE front loading washer (classic 3.1 cubic foot, not the new 3.5) had developed a roaring sound during the spin cycle. It has worsened to a loud knocking sound and the washer sometimes won't even spin at all unless you take out the wet clothes, set the knob for the final spin and allow the empty drum to spin through the complete cycle. The roaring sound comes back but at least it'll spin.

Any ballpark estimates on the cost of fixing this? Given the dropping prices of 3.5 cu ft front-loaders, would it be best just to replace it?

Sounds like back tub bearing seal has leaked water into the drum bearing. Also the knocking sound might be a drum support weld that has failed. Best to replace the washer. If you got 6 yrs of service without any repairs, replace the washer. As good as these machines perform, tub bearings and drum supports are an expensive fix.

If you have no service plan or insurance on this unit,you're screwed.The average overall price to repair it parts and labor
+tax is about $750!!!!!!!!!!

Frigidaire Front Loaders!

After all the grief I had from the LG I am still up in the air about what to buy. I am considering closing up the laundry closet I made and using it for storage again. I was told I could remove the cabinet from where my Equator used to be in the kitchen and put a regular front loader their. Can anyone tell me if the height requirement for the Affinity and the square door models are the same as the very basic Frigmores. Do the top of the Affinity and Square door models come off like the Frigmores?
I just want to make sure they are all compatable for Standard counter height? Also are the Duet Sports able to go under counter?

If to was up to me right now I would buy the Frigidaire, either one of the Square door models or the Affinities. I have seen these machines up close at the store where we buy our applances and they seem to be very well built, and Frigidaire has about the best pricing right now over anybody else. Controls seem to be easy to operate and user friendly. Back in December we went to Nebraska Furniture Mart and I could have gotten an Affinity in Glacer Blue for $449,(Washer only though). This is would be my choice to go with. Happy Shopping. Let us know what you decide. Danf.
