Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Powder shower

You may have seen the Gain commercial where the people are literally crazy for the scent, but it's much ado about nothing. Let me explain. When Gain first came out, the scent WAS amazing. Many people talked about it, in a more sane version than in the commercial. I had never smelled a single, stand-alone washing product scent so enticing. Alas, the current Gain powders are not the same. But in the dizzying array of versions at Ollie's, one of them, a box of Gain Clean and Sparkling was close. I'll have to go back and buy a box to know for sure. Calling P&G might also help.

I remember when they discontinued Lilac Tide, and I had a long engaging conversation with a customer service rep, who said that there were no plans to re-issue the scent, but that she would pass along the request and my hope to see it again on the shelves. I was as persuasive and cordial as possible. Others must have called as well, because Tide Lilac re-appeared at Target and has been there ever since.

Who else remembers the Original Gain and how wonderful it smelled? I really can't recall when it appeared. Mid 70's, early 80's rings a faint bell. (That my aging sniffer is off in all of this is also a possibility.) Smile.

Only one other scent ever made me swoon: Original Dash mixed with standard dose of Original Calgon. Almost but not quite equal to Gain, that combinations made for me the perfect laundry scent. Even now, I always hope and search for that smell, but I've never made the phone call. Odd what we do and don't get to. Tide's phone number is easily available. Not sure who made long gone Dash, maybe Lever Brothers. The quest goes on.

Funny and comforting the way we all love soap, and have our favorites. Ask Joe Blow on the street and he'll most often say, "Doesn't matter. What ever's on sale is fine."

Blame Walmart..

If you want to blame anyone for the lack of Powders, blame Walmart for starting this mess. They threatened detergent manufactures to start making more Concentrated detergents, or simply LOSE their spot on the shelves. P&G was told to make more Liquid Tide variations, as part of a marketeting agreement with Walmart, and Walmart dropped a lot of the Powder Tide verisons, to make room for the Liquid crap.

I prefer powdered HE detergent as well. We have soft water, and the liquids just foam too much in our front-loader. However, it is getting more and more difficult to find HE powders in my area. Tide HE powder was the only choice when I went shopping this afternoon. Of course, it was at least $2 higher than the other, non-HE powders.

Tide Powder itself, is more expensive overall.

Tide 64 Loads Liquid, is $11.99 everyday price @ Target, but there Powder is $14.99 for Tide Plus Bleach, 53lds, and the same price for Tide Original HE.

Tide Powder is also more expensive then Liquid, at multiple supermarkets here. The only store that has it priced correctly is Walmart, which has it for $11.99 across the board for 100oz Liquid, and 95oz Tide.

I wonder if P&G could be doing Price Fixing...

Thanks...

...for bringing that topic up again. In the meantime I found (and bought) some Tide liquid detergents for HE washers. That would be: Original scent, Apple Mango Tango (yup, found it) and Lavender (doesn't smell like lavender but my nose said it should be okay). So I have those 3 bottles but still had no time to use them.

I had the chance to look at other stores like Publix. They do look all the same, so I think I'll have to visit the big stores in the north of the US like Meijers or so to get the real "detergent aisle flash" :P
