It has been months in the planning on my end, not including the FDIC taking over the bank I work at. Not to worry, so far they still need someone to pay the bills and that's what I do, accounts payable. Got "Karen" road ready, I hope, my 1997 Mercedes C280 and at the end of October I'm driving to Disneyworld for a week with friends and family.

Depending on weather, which I won't know till a few days out, I may take a northern type route. Leaving Vegas, taking I40 to Amarillo, then cutting down across Texas, through Dallas and onto I10. Or there is a southern route. Leaving Vegas and going through Phoenix to pick up I10 all the way across the south.

What I was looking for are any heads up on attractions along the way (biggest ball of string and such), good little food places and any routes or construction areas I might avoid. Have heard there is major construction in Albuquerque. Also any ideas about weather that time of year. I've posted a link to one place I am going to stop at. I just have to be careful of knife wielding, flower pot pushing southern belles. And the link has more info on other movie locations.

I haven't had a good long road trip in over twenty years. With today's technology, the cell phone, XM radio and GPS, it's not the trips we used to take to Michigan from Phoenix in the early 1960s armed with just an ice chest and water jug! And if you have any road trip stories to share, please do!

Mid-September to the end of October is a great time for travel. The summer vacation madness is over, but the weather still ranges from very good to great most years, in most of the country.

We've done cross-country road trips several times, and the bottom line is, take 10 if you just want to get there, or take a more northerly route if time isn't the first consideration.

Iron, have a wonderful time! We will converse when you return. We have each other's email and I have your other info. Have fun!

Google Maps

Thanks for the kind responses. I've been looking over Google Maps, with their ground views. Checking out the waterways around Mobile, Alabama and Pensacola, Florida. I'm not a big fan of tall bridges, but these look okay. Of course checking the Florida weather and I see it's been raining about every day there.

Michael, I might make a run through Atlanta on the return trip. My younger brother lives in Knoxville. It looks like I-75 will take me that way. I'll certainly drop an email before and let you know.

Jeff, most of our family's early roadtrips were in the middle of Summer and pre-air conditioning it was not fun. But we didn't know any different. It may be too late, but maybe get to seem some Fall color. If I do go to Knoxville, then I'll be taking I40 back.

And Scott, always feel free to drop a note!

my 2 cents

I have driven across the us 4 times this year

If you can avoid I-40 through most of New Mexico, Texas and parts of Oklahoma are tatterd and in horrid repair.. Not to mention the fact that most places are down to ONE lane... Its horrific to say the least.. It took me 15 hours to get from little rock to the texas pan handle last time i whent this way

I have driven from vegas to detroit a few weeks back.. I drove through colorado (I-15 to I-70) and kansas and missouri, dropped down to nasheville and hit I40 to get home one time... If you did that you could actualy hit I-75 all the way down and its 10 hours from nashville to orlando..
Basicly it would be 10 hours fron Sin City to Denver, 17 hours from Denver to Nashville and 10 hours to orland according to Rand Mcnalley...

I looked up going across I-40 as well there is aout a 30 min time differance..

Also: Gas up in Colorado, Kansas, Tennesse and Gerogia.. Or Arizona, Texas, Oklahoma, Tennesse, Georgia... There are 7 gas stations on I40 through new mexico.. My chevy van almost ran out of gas twice in new mexico..Oklahoma is nearly as bad.. And talk about dull OMG.. There aint crap in oklahoma, texas or new mexico.. Alb. NM is nice but very stuck up.. IMHO...

Weather wise i think you will just be hitting the cold season but no snow that i know of..But im sure others can add to this..

Just be warned i think of I40 as i do of carrots... EWWWWWWWWWW
Plus driving on I70 you can stop more often as there are more stop offs and stuff to do..

Feel free to email me in private and i will give you my cell #.. I drive across the us about 5 or 6 times a year so i have a good feel of whats out there and can give you some maps and such if you want them.. (i love to drive what can i say... mr. malibu has had 400 miles put on it since the 10th of september, my hyundai has had 36K on it since january)

happy travels

Travlincub321 you have mail. I'll have to check out that route you suggested. My younger brother lives in Knoxville and I was thinking of seeing him on the way back. However will all the rain that is going on in that area, flooding and road closures that may not happen.

Now in Oklahoma there is this place. My mom and I stopped there on a trip years ago. She used to collect the stuff. I'm surprised to see it is still in business and making the same pottery.
