Road trip!!

It's been a good while since I've done a major road trip/international rescue mission.  The border having been closed in 2020 into 2021 was a key factor, but that didn't stop me from rounding up more machines!  

With the gracious help of folks here in automaticwasher-land, I managed to find and store 4 dishwashers and 1 automatic washer that I simply had to have.  

Last week, we finally rented a truck and set off to Ohio where most of the "goodies" had been patiently waiting for me.   It was a long trip but worth it.  

I'm definitely not as energetic as I used to be, doing all that driving, loading, and unloading... LOL

Rescued! 1961 Waste-King Universal dishwasher

I found this one first...  It was being sold off in a house demolition sale, IIRC, along with a pink cooktop and oven.  Amazingly, the door is a 'custom' wood paneled one!

This one is going to need a good cleaning for sure, but per the condition of the racks and tub, I suspect this dishwasher only got used at Thanksgiving a couple of times.  If were to make any serious bets, I'd bet that this one will fire right up when I get around to adding electricity!

1957(?) Westinghouse Wash-Well dishwasher

This one came from a fellow aw.org member in Arkansas.   It's going to need some messing with but I've always wanted a Westy pull-out dishwasher.  I'll need to do some digging for service information.  I'm hoping the restoration will be fairly simple - it's gonna need some rewiring 'cause the cord to the motor seems nice and crispy... LOL     Tub, racks, and top seal are all in very good condition!

1957(?) Youngstown Kitchens 30-incher

A "unicorn" machine for me...  The house in the Montreal suburb of Pointe-Claire where I lived most of my life had one of these in the kitchen, however it had been removed by the time we moved into the house.  I knew of one neighbour who had the Youngstown version of an electric sink with this dishwasher (and a YK disposal, too).  Over the years, I've stumbled across not one, but two of these and never followed through.  I'm glad to have finally found one after all these years!! 

It's not in mint condition to be sure... and it seems the timer is 'frozen' so this one will be somewhat of a challenge to get running again just to see how poorly it really did wash dishes.... LOL   The door seal seems to be in very good shape at least.  And yes, there is a lower panel to this but we were unable to find it in the storage area where it had been living.  I am sure it will turn up.

Paul, the WK was our 1st dishwasher, but ours was acqired sometime during 1960 or very early 1961 at the latest as it was moved with us to the ew house in September 1961. Our timer dial had the 2 shades of turquoise as shown on the illuminated logo light on the panel as opposed to yours with two shades of silver. Our original timer dial had to be replaced (since you had to pull the knob out to start) and the replacement was just like your dial.

Paul, in the process of looking for our new house, I remember one new house with pink appliances (which I even hated then) and the dishwasher was a front loading Youngstown, probably standard 24" width one.

1950 GE Stand-Alone dishwasher

The only one I could easily find the model number for... it's a CBE-748-G16. 

 

This machine turned up in a FB group I belong to (Thank you posting this, Chuck!!) and I had been planning on rescuing this from the home where it had originally been installed sometime in summer of 2020...  That didn't quite work out and fortunately, the owner of the house where this was installed did not mind the additional wait.  I travelled from Ohio to West Virginia to get this one; we had to remove it but that went incredibly well.  I brought my blowtorch to deal with old plumbing connections... LOL 

The machine had not been used in many, many years but there was still a "live" water supply connection to it! 

This is another one I'll be needing service info on - there's a bit of a snag with trying to get the lid trip to actually open it.  And I am missing the 'glass tray' for the middle of the upper rack.   However, it's likely going to be a while before I get this one restored... 

Of course if anyone here hears of an GE like this being scrapped, I'm definitely interested in buying that rack section!

Last but not least....

A 1957, Sheer-Look, Control-Tower WI-57 Blackstone BA250... but in white.... 

OK, all kidding aside, THIS was a real find because I just happen to have a fully-functional 1957 Frigidaire Control-Tower dryer to match it! 

Some more club history here:  this is one of the machines rescued by Jon from the Aberdeen Farm way back when.  It's done a tour of the country since then - it moved from Iowa (thank you, Ben!) to Ohio, then up to the land of the Maple Leaf with yours truly. 

I haven't done any messing around with it yet, but as you can see it's in the basement which means it's going to get a good once-over then it will join it's dryer mate!  

So... y'all know what I'll be doing in the next few months now....

We had that Youngstown for about 60 days in 1978--moved into a house w/the original kitchen (except for the oven) built in 1958-60. When we realized how useless it was (my mom had a Kenmore from about 1968 in the old house) it got chucked for a new 19 series KA.

Wow great finds Paul!!! I had that Westinghouse dishwasher installed in my kitchen for about 2 years and loved it. It was super quiet and performed well for an impeller dishwasher. But my favorite of all your finds is the early Waste King dishwasher as I've never seen one of those before. The machine looks like it was very low use with the stickers still intact on the inside of the door.

Congratulations, the WI-57 ain't bad either, I was there the day we pulled that out of the field of dreams. We captured it being saved 25 years ago ironically 2 days from now 10/5/1997 in video I have of the farm at about 13:40 minutes in.

Great Road Trip Paul

Maybe its a good idea to only do these road trips every few years it would save a lot of driving just to get one appliance.

 

It will be interestingly to see the WK DW actually working, I have a feeling it probably works fairly well, but unfortunately there durability was so poor that I never saw one that lasted long enough to get to play with one.
