Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

Congratulations!!

Congratulations on your find, Christina!!! Glad your 1-18 is up and running! You will love it.

That was my link, that "UncleJohn" posted from 2006 (my username was 'bwoods' then). Can't believe that was 14 years ago. I even remember writing that message on AW when I got the machine. That was my first time owning a 1-18 and I knew nothing about it. I found out later mine was not actually "poppy" but "terra-cotta" in color. One of the AW members politely informed me of that.

Poppy is a darker shade of red/orange. Terra-cotta, a color Frigidaire/GM introduced later, is about the shade of a clay flower pot. Yours is beautiful!!

I hope you enjoy your 1-18. Mine still runs perfectly. Yes, the lights slightly flicker with the agitation on my terra cotta machine. They do not flicker at all with my other (white) 1-18.

Hope you can find an agitator cap and a fabric softener dispenser one day.

Poppy Frigidaire

Hey Roger, really glad to see its you, sounds like the A team with yourself and Christina bagging all those mint washers, love the GE with mini basket and the Maytag looks absolutely gleaming..

I did laugh when I saw the "Roger loves fab con" ha ha, well you must have been a trend setter because weve all ditched it now in favour of white vinegar !!

Look forward to seeing more post & pics of the new washers !!

Sorry for the delay in replying...

I had a pretty hectic week helping my aunt move some of her things into her storage unit. It was a 2-day ordeal.

So I'm finally back to catch up on here.
I did my laundry in the POPPY 1-18 today and everything went smoothly as expected.
:o)

Now to get to the replies...
:o)

Yogitunes/Martin:

Thank you!
It was all Roger, he was the brains behind the whole cabinet swap. Without him none of my washer hobby would be happening. So a big THANK YOU goes to Roger, my friend & partner in crime!

The bleach/dye dispenser is missing. I never got one of those with this POPPY or Ross's ALMOND Custom 1-18. So I've never had one of them.

As for the agitator cap, yes POPPY came with an agitator cap and the lint filter. I just didn't put the agitator cap on because I pour the detergent down the agitator instead of directly on the clothes. And I wouldn't want to risk the cap falling into the tub while the Jet-Cone is agitating (ouch).

replies part 1:

i was going to try to reply to each comment in separate comments, but i think it would fill this thread with too many comments. so, i'm going to reply to each person in one reply.

peteski50/Peter:
thank you for the best wishes. but no dice on painting the wall. LOL...
i'm curious, what is your aunt's name? i'm still open on adding a name to just plain POPPY.
:o)

mickeyd/Michael:
yeah, that was a very big load of towels. i want to say it might have been 2 weeks worth of towels (maybe?) i wasn't sure if i was going to be able to fit them all into one load.
as for the turnover of the maxi-load, that's the kind of turnover i am used to seeing in the 1-18, "the sections kind of wait their turn".
to me, it sort of reminds me of like the junior high school square-dance we used to have to do for p.e. class.
rave on my good friend, rave on...
;oD

Sudsomatic/Corey:
thank you. i still feel amazed that i am seeing a Frigidaire POPPY in person, and that it's mine!? i can't help to glance over at it every time i pass by it & smile.
:o)

to be continued...

Congrats! ....

that is one fine looking and amazingly clean 47 year old Frigidaire!!!

One tiny suggestion. You "might" get a bit better roll-over of the clothes if you install the cap each time.

I learned this by reproducing the rings and pulsator on the early 60's agitators and then experimenting while QA'ing this stuff.

What I found is, water rushes under the rings and into the agitator column slits. Some of the wash energy on the down stroke is being wasted without the cap in place. If the cap is not in place to hold air pressure within the column, it allows water to simply come on into the column each stroke.

If the cap is in place, it prevents this extra water from rushing in, keeping that "wasted" energy in the wash water within the tub.

*** But, this only holds true for full loads, where the water level covers all the agitator slits. Anything smaller than a full load and the upper slits never get submerged, whereby acting just like if no cap was in place.

replies part 2:

sorry for the delay in replying back to everyone. i had the part 1 all typed out and i hit something on my keyboard and it seemed to disappear on me. later after being discouraged with this laptop, i started closing down the computer and i found my reply in a separate tab all by itself. so i went ahead and sent that and figured i would reply in parts.
so, here we go with replies...

DaveAMKrayoGuy/Dave:
thank you Dave.
i don't know if you would call me a regular youtuber? i do have some videos but i don't think i have more than maybe a handful of videos that i've posted on youtube. but i did post some videos of the ALMOND Custom 1-18 that we switched the POPPY Gold Crown 1-18 cabinet to. check them out
:o)

chestermikeuk/Mike:
thank you Mike.
where was this that you seen the "thumper" action when you were with your nan? was that here in the U.S.?

mickeyd/Michael:
it's all good my friend. i knew what happened. the same thing happens to me too!!
LOL...
:oD

rogera608s/Roger:
it's all good! it's great to see both your GOLDIES; GE Filter-Flo & the Maytag 806
;o)

goatfarmer/Kenny:
we sure do!
ha ha ha...
Wonder Twin Powers, ACTIVATE!

turquoisedude/Paul:
thank you paul.
hahaha...
nah... there's no room for a POPPY dryer. but thanks for thinking about it.
heh heh heh...
:oD

reactor/Barry:
thank you Barry.
i remember reading that post of your's about it not being POPPY but the color is actually TERRA-COTTA. your's sounds just as beautiful!
as for the agitator cap, i do have the agitator cap. and the fabric softener dispenser, i did find a new in box Frigidaire fabric softener dispenser that sits on top of the agitator BUT...
it didn't fit on the top, it was just a tad too small to fit on the ridge. so i believe it is actually for the Frigidaires from the later 60's that were before the 1-18 came out.
:o/
the good news is that i do have a DOWNY fabric dispenser ball. but i haven't used it yet.

akronman/Mark:
thank you Mark.
very cool, huh? i had the ALMOND one but i couldn't resist getting the POPPY. and i was pretty floored when i seen that it was shaded and from 1973
;oD

peteski50/Peter:
yes the POPPY is "thumping" along smoothly. i just did my weeks laundry a few days ago with not a hickup or hitch from ol' POPPY.
your aunt's name FRAN, fits perfect for POPPY! i like the fact that her name starts with F like Frigidaire. i've named my COPPERTONE Maytag MABEL.
;o)

sfh074/Bud:
thank you Bud.
and thank you for the tip about getting better rollover by putting the agitator cap in place. it makes sense the way describe it and i can picture what you are sayin in my mind. so thanks alot for that tip! i will definitely try to remember that whenever i have a super sized load to wash.
;o)

Yogitunes/Martin:
i'm feeling the name FRAN too.
:o)

I see in the video you are running it without the cap ? Do you have a cap??? Let me know I think I might have an extra one.

Jetcone/Jon:

Thank you Jon.
Yes, I do have the agitator cap. I just usually don't put it on because I pour the detergent and fabric softener into the agitator when the machine is almost full. And I would hate for the cap to become loose & fall into the tub while it's agitating and get under one of the cones and break/chip the edge of the cone.
So I usually don't put the cap on. But yes I do have a cap for the agitator.
Thank you for asking & the offer.
:o)

Frigidaire 1-18 lint filter...

After that humongous maiden load
of towels in FRAN, me & Roger couldn't figure out what would be the best way to clear out the lint filter? I didn't want to slam it down on the counter or against the garbage can, for fear of breaking/chipping/cracking the filter. So I used a plastic hairbrush cleaner that I bought at Sally's Beauty Supply, but it didn't get all the lint out.
:o/

What to do, what to do...

After doing my weeks laundry I decided to try the kitchen sink sprayer, and it cleared out all the lint perfectly. And I have one of them screened sink drain strainers that caught all the lint. And that is made of metal, so I can slam that against the garbage can to clear it out.

I thought I would share this with all of you that have a bed-of-nails filter. Maybe this will even work for the brush lint filters too?

I'd love to know how others clear the lint from their washer's lint filters.

can't speak for others....

but I don't put the filter in....its just there for looks.....

actually wishing mine was the bed of nails.....mine has the screen filter, which I can't say is much effective, as once it gets filled, then all the water flows out the back...

so in part, might as well leave it out....

you would expect more flow of water since it is named "Jet Flo"

there doesn't seem to be much "jet flo" as it would indicate.....as a jet spray would seem more effective as moving the lint out of the way to capture more....just my opinion...

the circle fill spray has more force to it....

as long as were on the subject, never understood why cones were not added all the way up the JetAction agitator....seems it would be more effective for the larger loads...

Christina/Hippiedoll:

Thank you for your response...

So the Frigidaire Washer’s name is Fran, (though not “Rose” after the Poppy she’s in) a nice name, and I agree, fit for her, so have more fun with Fran...

And I will look forward to seeing much more...

Yogitunes/Martin:

You know, before I found FRAN, I didn't have a Frigidaire lint filter for ther ALMOND Custom 1-18. I ended up buying these little lint filter mesh bags, that were meant to be tied on (maybe to the end of the drain hose?) but I couldn't figure out how to get it onto the recirculating water spout in the washer. Maybe this is something you could figure out since you have more experience with washing machines than me? I think I bought these little lint filter mesh bags at either Walmart or possibly the DOLLAR TREE store?

As for the cones going (or not going) all the way up on the agitator, I wondered the same thing too? Maybe with a load so full, it gives it more room at the top of the tub to help the clothes circulate better?
:o/

Repairguy/Melvin:

I did rinse the filter under the kitchen sink faucet, which I'm guessing is kinda the same thing as using the outside faucet? Maybe the water pressure isn't the strongest, because it didn't clear out all the lint. That's when I decided to try the sprayer which worked wonderfully at clearing out all the lint from the filter. And I have that screen sink strainer for the drain that catches all the lint and keeps it from going down into the housepipes.
