Help Support :

I am very upset for you Matt. I know myself, losing one of my cats at just 4 from a kidney infection was horrible. I also blamed myself for not getting him to the vet sooner.

Take care

Rob

Matt:

I'm so sorry about the loss of Jock. I know exactly how you feel. When we lost our beloved Sheltie, Katie a number of years ago, I could not even go outside into the backyard. There were too many memories and it was much too painful.

Although there have been many pets in our lives since Katie, there will always be a special place in my heart for her. I hope that the years soften your loss, and that the happy memories of Jock will bring you a smile.

Sorry for your loss. I have about 20 bulldogs as clients in my veterinary practice and they are wonderful, loving dogs.

"I doubt if that temp would have killed such a young dog."

Gizmo: As a veterinarian in Texas, I deal with snakebites and heatstroke quite often. Our snakes aren't nearly as poisonous as some of the ones in Australia. I rarely have a patient die of bites from the four species of venomous snakes found here: rattlesnakes, copperheads, cotton mouths (also called water moccasins), and coral snakes (venom is like a cobras but bites are rare). My own dog was bitten on the lip and tongue by a cotton mouth and she pulled through just fine.

However, heatstroke is a big killer here, and my part of Texas rarely gets over 100 degrees. Young dogs are often the ones who are affected because they tend to chase things and run the fence line when they see a cat or strange person. Even if they have proper shade and plenty of water they still over exert themselves. Older dogs tend to lay up in the shade.

My condolences!

I hope that you can take comfort in knowing that so many of us, here on this site, have been where you are, felt as you do and understand your sorrow.

sorry to hear it

Hi Matty,
I am very saddened to read about poor Jock passing away,it is very heaertbreaking when our beloved pets pass on, because as others have already posted, they really are a part of the family.
When my little mini-fox terrier Max died about a year ago, I cried for about 3 days afterwards so don't feel bad about crying over him it is perfectly natural.
Although Jocik's life was far too short, at least it was a very happy life filled with fun and love.
Best wishes.
Steve.

I am sorry to hear of your loss. It is always hard to lose a pet, especially when they are viewed as a member of the family.

58Limited: I didn't know you were a veterinarian! I think that Bulldogs are rather suceptible to heat anyway. There was a bulldog breeder here a few years ago that lost 4 of her dogs after being outside in 95 F temps for a few hours. I have heard that dogs with the short or no muzzles have a propensity for breathing problems in adverse conditions, have you heard of that as well?

To Everyone:
Remember that out animals depend on us to keep them well. And it up to us to safegard their health and well being. This includes ensuring that our pets are not subjected to adverse conditions. As a dog behavioural specialist, you would not believe the things I see and hear almost on a weekly basis!

Two years ago our neighbors left their black lab outside on a 100 degree day, and I came home and my dogs were barking their heads off at the fence. I looked over and there was their poor black lab, passed out on the patio with her tongue hanging out, of course the people weren't at home, I took the dog in to my house and put her in the bath and showered her with cool water. She recovered, but to my surprise the people who owned her didn't think that that could happen to a dog!

Hi Matt,

I am sorry for your loss. As another animal lover I know what it's like losing a beloved pet. My condolences are with you.

Hey-
I am sorry for your loss. I have a cat that I had passed away from me right before I had to go to school. A neighbor came over and told me. I cried about it for a week. I still have Tobey, my other cat, although, he misses her too. I know that you will be with Jock again. Take care, Ritchie

HI Matt, I am so sorry to hear of your lose;I know what you are going through. I had a greyhound 2 summers ago that got into a bottle of Advil, not even opened yet, ate some and died in a week. Don't beat yourself up over this buddy; it will be hard for awhile but if you need to talk, we are here for you Matt. Let the tears come, that will help too. A big hug and a kiss and I hope you will feel better soon. Bye for now. Gary

pet loss

Dear All: last April I lost my beloved "baby." He was a 19 year old Siamese male cat, neutered and declawed (I know this is controversial). He was my best friend in that whenever I was home he was most of the time with me and so loving. He always licked my face and particularly my nose. I got him when he was 6 weeks old and unless I was not there, he slept with me every night. I've had a lot of hard times in my life, but the day that my parents took him to the vet to be put down was the hardest day of my life. I am drawing tears right now even writing about this. A week later, I went to the ASPCA and got two new cats. I love them dearly and they have helped a lot. My parents buried baby in their back yard with a cement slab over top of his grave and a cement cross over that under a lilac bush. I still have not been able to look at it. Someday I know I will--but not quite yet. Some people just don't understand how a pet can be so dear to people but others like you guys do. Thank you for your understanding.

Matt, I've had difficulty logging in since Friday night, that's why you haven't seen condolences from me. I had to put my dog down August 15, 2003, still hurt at times. This is a hurt a load of washing or 500 just doesn't quite take away. A gentle bear hold for you mate. Bob

My best friend was Teddy. He was a Manx cat long haired and all black.I found his mother in an alley and she had kittens but died from a breach which was Teddy coming out sideways. He was blocked but when I got home and saw his mother(Babe)had hemoraged,I called my friend,Carol who was a vet.She was there to help out and noticed Teddy' was still alive.she opened babe up and saved Teddy. He had no tail and was the runt of the litter.Of 6 kittens born,He was one of the 3 that survived.Teddy was more like a dog. He'd drink out of the toilet(sometimes falling in)and would love to get a wad of paper and bring it to me to throw. He'd answer the phone and slept on my stomach every night waking me up at 4:30 AM to keep the 5AM alarm from going off.he hated noise. My favorite thing to do was ressell with him. He'd grab my hand and chew it like a toy. This could go on forever and he also liked to have stare contests.I mss him so much.He died of feline hepatitous in 1992.I named him Teddy because he was just like a live Teddy bare.
