Saladmaster machine - how to use?

Hey gang -

Found a clean Saladmaster slicer today at a local thrift for 5 dollars. I've always liked Saladmaster products and was happy to see this come along. The casting date on the stand is 1968.

Being a novice of pretty much anything food - I have NO clue how to use this thing. Any one have experience using the Saladmaster machine - pros, cons, PITA vs. worth the effort?

I love eating veggies and thought this might be a fun way to spice things up.

Congratulations on your find.

There are two holes in the open edge of the hopper. The pin goes through one, then through the clip like holders in the finger guard and then through the hole on the other side of the hopper. You put food against the cone, hold it against the cone by pressing the finger guard against it and then turn. You place a bowl in front to catch the stuff that falls out of the front of the cone. This is the machine that started the Salad Master Company. You can probably still get the instruction book from them or find it on ebay or on Amazon.

Ben, thats a good buy and i am sure you have noticed how much they often go for on "the bay".  My aunt has one that came with her Saladmaster cookware,  she uses her's mostly at the holidays, chopping nuts, grating chocolate etc. 
They do so much more than make cole slaw. Best of luck with it.  alr2903

My Mama and Aunt Mildred used theirs for the "bestest" slaw ever! I'll hunt around here for the book--since I can never discard manuals it's sure to be here somewhere.
 
Thanks guys! I did a quick online search and came up with the owners manual to the newest version of the product. Helpful now to see what each of the cones produce.

From what I can tell, it is in good shape but it has been used. Some of the more aggressive cones will contact the bottom of the chute. Is this normal?

Attach the Cones

To the head of your Kitchenaid and go for real power and fewer scrapped knuckles.
 
I was going to mention that this system appears to have been borrowed (I used a polite term) from KitchenAid.  Or did SM strike up some kind of licensing agreement with KA?

SaladMaster-hand powered food processor-slicer,shredder.Use when you have no power-or just want to do the job by hand.The Hostess center--Pretty cool-sounds like its motor is REALLY geared down for low speed and high torque.The machine is in beautiful condition.Yes-the Misses can shred and slice the fruits and vegetables for salad-and Hubby can use the grinder to grind the deer meat for dinner on the grill!Perhaps the wild hog meat and even bear meat.And at Thanksgiving or the other holidays-the grinder can make cranberry-orange relish-SO GOOD!

HI Ben, I have a brand new one of these. WATCH YOUR FINGERS, the blades are very sharp and you will be giving blood for sure. I use mine all of the time and love it.

banging cones

I resell these food processors on eBay. Every so often, I will pick up one and some of the cones will "bang" against the frame. I've painstakingly bent them back into shape. It's a long process because often fixing one side will unbalance the other.

Does anyone have a better idea for how to fix these?

So speaking of Saladmaster. I lucked out a week or two ago and picked up this super duper clean Saladmaster oil core electric frying pan for $10.. THey sell these things for something like $400.00 why on earth anyone would pay that much for an electric frying pan though.. ]
i'LL be putting in on marketplace.
