SAMSUNG WASHING MACHINE SPIDER CORROSION

Hi all,

I just stumbled upon this video earlier today.

The corrosion on the assemble looks horrible, could it really be due to bad metals used in the machine?

I would like to know your thoughs on this.

Numerous factors actually can contribute to this. These include, use of frequent cold washes allowing build up of detergent to take place, poor maintenance of the washer itself and generally because this washer is a Samsung...poor quality.

At our old house we had a Whirlpool WFW72 which was 3 years old when we left it. It was still working fine when we left it with no odors or broken spider symptoms. The Maytag Neptune (which I don't really like) which we have right now at our new place, is also fine. Despite the mold in the seal (which is actually slowly going away) the spider and bearings are fine for its age still.

I think the best way to avoid something like this is...Avoid Samsung washers, if you own a front load leave the door open after each wash (I did this on our WP duet and its never had an issue) and use hot-warm washes with a tub clean cycle couple times a year.

I have a question here-about drum spiders.Why not make them out of the same material as the drum?Problem then solved!IE SS drum-SS spider.Not rocket science here.

Cheapskatery, I presume. As far as I know, the last time anything similar was done was on slant front Westinghouse washers, they had cast iron spiders, not the same as the steel drum, but close enough with both being ferrous.

I have had 2 Samsung washers (UK versions), and I have never been that impressed.

The TOL one I got 12kg load (pretty much the top capacity you could get here at the time), could screen version went from brand new to dead in 7 months (motor fault).

The one I have now (different model), again, not thrilled, but is 2 years old next month, so an improvement.

Never had the spider issue as of course I maintain my machine meticulously (probably overly obsessive in fact).

But Samsung washers, meh.

The impression I got when I was looking at machines last year, was that the Samsung models appeared to be 'flim-flam and no substance' - especially at the dearer prices. Miele quality they most certainly are not.

However, a bargain might be had in the sales - possibly the cheaper models without the 'add-wash' mini-door.

I wasn't terribly impressed by owners complaints of faults, (PCB errors, drum 'sticking' problems) - and Samsungs's delays in getting them fixed. Parts seemed to be in short supply too.

And then there were complaints about manufacturer extended warranties not being registered properly or being honoured by Samsung.

Nah, at least with a 'closer to home' manufacturer, spares can be more readily gotten hold of.
