Hello everyone...i'm not sure if someone has posted this link before, i haven't seen it so thought i'd add it on...its the full episode of Tim Hunkins and Rex Garrods 'The Secret Life of the Washing Machine', i just sat through the whole thing TWICE! Its been years since i watched it!! brings back memories! there's some good shots of Hotpoints from the 70's, there's an 80s Philips right at the end, Keymatics are shown, the old, old Bendix washer....any members who havent seen it should definately watch it, might also be interesting for other members from across the pond to watch and understand how UK/European washers work!! And anyone who has seen it will no that feeling you get right at the end with the Pyramind of Washers and dryers!! WOW! How the hell did they manage that??

Anyway, hope you enjoy guys!!

Ohh, that's a long time ago since I saw that program. It was a favourite of mine at the time.

Thank you for adding the link.

Thanks for the link!

That was an ingenious video.

We should get a series going here to compliment "How it's Made" and call it "How it Used to be Made!"

Good to see some of the history surrounding a mainstay of nearly every household.

Has anyone noticed that, even though Tim Hunkin is mechanically inclined and gets his hands dirty, how polite and well spoken he is? Or is that because he is an Englishman?

my favourite part is the hotpoint with the concrete taken out, ahh those classic hotpoint spin noises!! i did that trick myself when my nans old Creda supaspeed was replaced, got my g/dad to assist in taking out all the concrete and had some fun sending it walking round the yard, he was amazed that an 11 year old lad had the knowledge to know what he was doing in order to make it perform like it did, happy days! what i wouldnt give to have ago at doing it again! great fun!

GrEaT LiNk!!!

Pedro,
Thanks for the link! I have not seen this episode in ages! I remember this episode many, many years ago! I always looked forward to this program when it came on here in the US on PBS.
I loved the machines! Loved how he talked about the Hoover Keymatic being a complex machine. I wonder who donated the machines, or if they really came from "scrap".
One questions however.....
Has anyone come across a machine anywhere that had a pulley filled with concrete? That was amazing to me. It was actually the only part of the program that I did not remember.
Thanks again Pablo for the link! I am going to "snag" it for myself and burn it to a DVD.

My parents recorded this for me when I was little!!! It's on the same tape that my grandpa made for me when I turned 2, he video taped his washer doing a complete cycle! I gotta transfer that tape to DVD!

Hi Pedro

Thanks for the link! It was a great program, the only bit I thought went on a bit was the car demo. I think that was just an excuse to do some stunts and really did not have a lot to do with washers at all!

Thanks for posting!

Rob

Hi Pedro.

a great programme from, I think, around 1988.
My dad recorded me the 2 series on tape, but they got wiped years ago.

It really is great viewing, but is painful at the same time - purple liberators, hoover keymatics - both slanted and matchbox, black facia creda's etc etc.

Machines which we would pay huge sums of money to have today.
Still a great nostalgia trip.

Cheers
Paul
