Maytag HOH door gasket availability

Hi Rod:

Unfortunately this is a problem for all pre-1976 Maytag "Halo Of Heat" dryers at this point, as new old stock door gaskets are very rare these days. Maybe someone here will share if they have come up with another gasket/gasket material that could be used to fabricate a new one. If not, I believe the original Maytag part number is 302448 for the DG701/DE701 and similar models. An Ebay search may eventually turn one up, or perhaps a call to an appliance dealer that has been around since at least the 1980s might scare one up as well.

Those door gaskets were getting hard to find more than a decade ago.

 

About 6-7 years ago, I sent an NOS 302448 gasket off to be analyzed for reproduction. Once received, they said it could be repopped for $120 each using modern silicone rubber which is probably superior to the material originally used. I figured that price was more than most would be willing to shell out. Besides that, there's very little demand for these gaskets, which is probably why Maytag discontinued them in the early 2000's.

I wonder if something from McMaster-Carr or another industrial supply company could be substituted. It is a shame that we can get to the point where one unobtainable part sidelines a machine.

I posted this drawing of the dryer door gasket profile back in 2014 with the hope that someone would find something similar available and share it with the rest of us. The portion that hangs down on the far right butts up against the closed door and forms a seal. The part hanging down just to the left of that tucks into the gap between the dryers front panel and the drum cover forming a seal there, and the rest just extends into the drum. This drawing is based on a well used original that was worn out but still had a few good areas, so the dimensions might vary slightly from a good new one.

Maytag 641C Gasket(s)

I have a new wrinkle to add. While working on my 641C I found a white gasket in the bottom with part of it in the heater shroud melted. I'm also having trouble with the dryer cutting clothes that manage to get between the drum and the front cover. I think this white gasket actually fits under the gray door gasket and over the edge of the front cover, extending into the gap a bit. The problem is that my drum isn't centered in the door opening! It is about 3/4" at one corner and about 1/4" at the other. So putting this back in might make things worse. So couple questions... 1) how can I center the drum and 2) what have others used to keep things out of the gap? Thanks!... Joe

Centering Drum Instructions

I have a 642C dryer and its existing door seal is on its last legs, but it is a one-piece seal - I have attached photos. I will be replacing my cracking seal with a NOS 3-2448 seal (found on eBay earlier this year.)

I have also included instructions for centering a HOH dryer drum from the April 1974 edition of Maytag's Service Matters newsletter. It looks like they adjust the drum by removing the control panel and reaching down to loosen and adjust the bolts attaching the blower housing to the A-frame. It is necessary to keep the rear panel in place during adjustment to keep the cabinet square.

I've heard that coating it in that 303 formula for rubber and plastic will extend any gaskets life.

Never under estimate the utility of affordable and readily available weather stripping.

Made in several thicknesses and widths. Made in several colors. Made of various materials including rubber. And made of several different compression ratings.

Just be sure to prep the surface by making sure it's clean. My magic ingredient after cleaning thoroughly is to wipe down the surface with simple rubbing alcohol and let dry.

I'd certainly be willing to pay $120 for a door seal if it was the difference between being able to repair and use my dryer vs not. And having a couple of backups would alse be desireable. I think we have 4 of those dryers in the current inventory.
