I have a kitchen full of GE appliances that were given to me during aneighbor's remodel. Early on the freezer drawer would come off the track. When I called 1-800-GE-Cares and scheduled service, I was advised I could purchase a service contract for $87.00 and wait 30 days to schedule service. Sounded good to me and so I did. The drawer glide replacement would have cost $238.00. Last fall the a piece broke off the ice maker and it would dribble on the drawer glide freezing the freezer shut, so I switched it off. In the hot spell last week the fridge held temps but the freezer would bounce between -7 and 26. I called GE cares and a new computer controll board was installed. The service tech showed me how to reattach the separater and I have ice. The cost $00. Renewal on the contract was $91.00. $178.00 for two expensive service calls. I got lucky.

Glad to hear that all worked out!

How do you like this fridge compared to the Amana I think you had previously?

Amana Comps

The GE is taller and not as wide. The shelves roll out, two of them fold back into themselves to provide taller spaces. It has more room in the fridge and holds more. It is very well lighted and easy to clean. I really like the digital temperature read out and tell at a glance how it's doing. The freezer definitly holds less, but the roll outs are smooth and easy to use. It is also very well lighted. It has triple the cooling capacity and freezes very quickly. The GE has a rounded textured door with I hate. It pocks if you just look at it. The repairman says the GE refrigeraters are not very reliable so maybe I can find doors to exchange. As long as it runs, I haven't found anything I like better.

Oh yes, definitely looks nice. I've thought if I needed new, I'd consider the LG French Door, which finally now comes in a 30" width. But, they don't get good reliability reports either according to Epinions, so I'm not sure. Whirlpool seemed to be the only thing that got any sort of consistent good reports. I don't think anyone makes their own bottom freezers any more, they all outsource them from someone else.
