40yrs ago today Servis Domestic Appliances UK introduced their first front loading washing machines, The Servis Compact MK72 series, it was the smallest compact sized washer but still took the same capacity load of other much larger machines, brought to you by Servis, the only UK specialist washing machine manufacturer - based in Darleston, West Midland, The Black Country, UK.

It took a 9lb load, was hot & cold fill with a 2.8kw heater, the inner & outer drums where made of vitreous enamel and the drum was mounted on two shock absorber struts attached to the base frame, you could take the cabinet off and it would still stand attached....the spin speed was 740rpm and the controls where a mechanical timer situated at the back of the machine for space saving and had a conrod connected to the programme controller on the fascia, it had four wheels for easy moving, dont forget some people where still wheeling even these machines to the kitchen sink to use!!!

Servis MK72 Compact Series (1972)

It had seven main washing programmes as identified by the HLCC (Home Laundry Care Council), there where only 7 main types of clothing that could be grouped together and washed using these programmes, sound like a simplicity we should revert back to today!!!

The programmes where numbered and you simply dial the programme number and the washer identifies the correct water level and agitation, along with number of rinses and spin speed which was fast @ 740rpm for 4mins, slow @ 460rpm for 2 mins and a "drip Dry" select which drained the water and left delicate manmade fibres dripping wet for line drying!! you also had the latest in "Bio Technology" which started all programmes off with a cold water fill to take advantage of the latest in "enzyme technology detergents...

Servis MK72 Compact Series (1972)

It had a two compartment detergent dispenser for pre-wash and main wash powder, this was a long drawer with smooth sides and was easily flushed through so no residues where left around!!

Hi Leon, yes looking forward to seeing them, where they made in the UK and exported or produced with you under license do you know??

Mike there beautiful !

I like the doors that are so thin it looks nice and flush.

The inner basket we would call it speckled navy blue basket here in the states as you well know.

Now how do you open the dryer door ?

And do you have any video's yet ?

It's great to see a machine still healthy for all those years congrats.

Daa I did not look at the right Mike lol.

Ahh look it has a Maytag halo of heat look in the back does it sort of work the same ?

700 RPM's is the norm here for Whirlpool belt drive models and GE mid line topload models.

Ahhh.

Servis Dryer

Hi Darren, yes the dryers operate with the "Halo of Heat" style, its a coil element that sits around the drum front, air is drawn from cabinet over the coils & heated, then pulled through the clothes and sucked out through the fan at the rear, the fan outlet is on top of the fan unit, there the vent hose is attached, the filter can either be a screen inside the drum or a box filter above the outlet vent...
